resident Harold welcomed all to the last meeting of January 2011. America the Beautiful was sung with much better sound than last week. Dick Robb gave the invocation – short and sweet – giving thanks for the food and companionship.

Visitors and Guests were welcomed by our own Mel Rubenstein including: Kathy Allen (communications) and Ed Walker ( DeWitt store manager) from Tops Markets; Sarah Frazzini Kendrick and Amy Hogan, teachers and program leaders at ManliusPebbleHillSchool.

Announcements:

  • Harold noted that services for Dr. Bob Grantham are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 ( 10:30 AM) Central Baptist Church 1926 Midland Ave., Syracuse.
  • Also on Saturday, Feb 5, will be a Pancake Day meeting at the DeWitt Fire Barn (9:00 AM) sharp. All are welcome.
  • Samaritan Center Luncheons on Feb. 26 and April 16.
  • Polio Eradication – Jimmy Jars are available at lunch to receive our spare change.
  • Jan Edwards of the Nottingham has informed us that Mildred Capozzi’s service will be held at May Memorial on Sunday, February 6th at 2:00 p.m.
  • Rotary Foundation reminder: our Club has a goal of $4,000 club-wide contribution this year. Currently we are at $1,950. With the Club matching contribution of $50 per person, just 21 more people need to sign up. See Judy Williams for details.
  • Pres. Hal also noted that there will be a DINNER MEETING (5:30 PM) on March 14 with the DeWitt Historian as guest speaker. No lunch meeting . Details to come

Program:

Kristin Hempel introduced MPH’s own EarlyAct group (preK-5th grade) directed bySarah Frazzinni-Kendrick and YouthAct (6th-8th grades which is directed byAmy Hogan.

Started in 2010 with much help from Kristin and Past President Richard Jenkins, these groups have been quite active and accomplished much in this short time.

For instance, EarlyAct now has 10 members, meets weekly and has taken on new projects such as a Children’s Consortium in which clothes, books, educational materials and toys are collected and gifted to Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, on February 13, the International Committee has organized a Teens for Jeans project in which Aeropstale has agreed to distribute jeans to the homeless that the members have donated.

YouthAct’s president, Liza Bruno, introduced their Club and all officers spoke. Goals of the year are to help people, help animals and to help people to understand how fortunate we are.
