AP English III Dual Credit 2017Research Paper Steps and Guidelines

  1. Have fiction book read and independent reading project completed by 10/9.
  2. By 11/6, read ‘“This is Where I Stand’: Arguing a Position,” and decide on an arguable, intriguing topic, stemming from your book, that you would like to research. Choosing your topic will assist in the formulation of your thesis and overall target of your research process.
  3. On11/7 and 11/8, you will research your topic and do the following:
  4. Collect information from at least five sources, which includes the primary source (the fiction book) and four secondary sources, that support your argument.
  5. Secondary sources (minimum of four in total) must be from DHS or TWU databases or websites approved by Dr. Dyer/Ms. Solomon.
  6. As you collect your research, be sure to keep it organized; record the citation information for each source used, as it will later go in your Works Cited.
  7. Cornell notes are optional but can be beneficial in helping students collect and organize their research.
  8. Have your research finished and sorted into categories by 11/9.
  9. On11/9 and11/10, you will type an MLA sentence outline.
  10. Use the sorted categoriesof your research to form the topic sentences of your MLA sentence outline.
  11. Your outline must include your thesis, topic sentences, evidence with in-text citations, and a Works Cited page on the final page.
  12. Refer to an example of an MLA sentence outline on my website.
  13. The outline is due on Google Classroom no later than 11:59pm on 11/10.
  14. After receiving your graded outline with feedback, on 11/13 and11/14, you will type the rough draft of your research paper.
  15. Dual Credit students, print off your graded outline with feedback before beginning your research paper.
  16. On 11/15, you will peer-edit another student’s paper and have yours peer-edited in Google Docs.
  17. Use the peer-review check list and guidelines for effective writing on my website.
  18. Dual Credit students, print off your peer-edited draft before typing your final draft.
  19. On 11/16, you will begin typing the final draft of your research paper that is due on Tuesday, November 28thon both Google Classroom and turnitin.com. The final draft requirements include:
  20. Position established, justified, and supported
  21. A minimum of 5 credible sources used
  22. Embed quotes and provide in-text citations after each piece of evidence, even if it is paraphrased.
  23. A Works Cited page in MLA format
  24. Every source used should have a Works Cited entry.
  25. Insightful commentary
  26. 5 double-spaced pages
  27. Times New Roman, 12-point font
  28. 1” margins all around
  29. Heading in the top left-hand corner of the page (student name, class, teacher name, date)
  30. Header in the top right-hand corner of the page (last name and page number)
  31. I encourage you to use Purdue OWL and my sample research paper as references for correct MLA usage.
