Tricycle is most common and widely used light duty vehicle since 1680’s. Several developments have been taken place in the area of design and developments of tricycle to improve the ergonomics and performance..

Presently there are several types of tricycle are in practice viz: paddle tricycle, fuel based tricycle and electric tricycle cycle. The use of electrical power for vehicle transportation is a multistage conversion process, hence not recommended, the running cost of fuel based tricycle is steadily increasing due to increase in fuel prices and the paddle operated tricycle requires lot of human efforts to drive the cycle not suitable for physically disable persons . Hence it is necessary to design and develop alternative source of power to drive the tricycle for physically challenged persons.

Renewable energy sources are clean, inexhaustible and abundant available sources across the world, wind, solar, biomass energy resources are major resources can be used to produce electric power. Presently solar photovoltaic systems emerged as promising clean source of energy and technically viable solution to elevate the energy quality. The Solar photovoltaic system converts solar radiation directly into electric energy.

In the present project solar photovoltaic powered tricycle was designed and developed to carry the load up to 150 kg (2 persons) based local climatic conditions and ergonomic requirements of the physically challenged persons.

The Tricycle consists of two Photovoltaic of 40 Watt peak, two 12V batteries, DC motor sprocket connected to the front wheel, electronic control systems and a chair. The solar photovoltaic power is used to charge the batteries. For complete charging usually the batteries will take 3 to 4 hour and deliver that power up to 6 to 7 hours. The tricycle has a maximum speed up to 25 km/h and very less turning radius and is ergonomically more suitable for physically challenged persons.
