Job Purpose:
This post requires a researcher with a strong interest in translational research to provide scientific support for the EME programme directorate. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working in biomedical or clinical research and have an interest in translational medicine.
The post will help to support the “needs led and science added” approach to research management that NETSCC delivers. The post holder will be required to provide content and research expertise to inform aspects of the research management lifecycle. The successful candidate will have experience of supervising or mentoring staff and be capable of providing training for other members of the directorate.
Tasks will include:
  • Reviewing databases of on-going and published research to identify research related to new applications submitted to the programme. Working with clinical and scientific colleagues to assess the importance of these or to identify overlapping research.
  • Literature searching and critical appraisal of the literature to support the development of new research areas that may be commissioned by the programme
  • Providing feedback to researchers with enquiries relating to the remit of the programme prior to application
  • Supporting the identification of external reviewers to maximise the potential benefit of peer review throughout the research management lifecycle
  • Identifying milestone reporting points for funded projects and supporting the assessment of contractual go/no-go decision points.
This post will have a role in engaging with stakeholderssuch as other research funders. The successful candidate may be asked to represent the programme at external meetings and conferences as they become established in their role.
Through the research on research programme, the post-holder will also have the opportunity to lead strategically important research projects that meet the core business needs of NETSCC.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities / % Time
  1. Scientific support
  • Respond to enquiries from researchers who are considering applying to the programme and provide high quality feedback to applicants throughout the research management lifecycle
  • Provide support and training for other staff within the directorate to develop the needs led, science added approach taken by NETSCC.
  • Provide scientific support for the work of the EME research funding Board and Prioritisation Group, attending meetings as required.
  • Contribute to the identification of research areas for commissioning by the EME programme and support the development of commissioning briefs
  • Build a good understanding of the research portfolio funded by the EME programme and advise and assist programme managers dealing with complex problems relating to individual projects
  1. External communications and collaboration
  • Establish close working relationships with other research staff within NETSCC
  • Represent the EME programme at events and meetings
  • Support the development of high quality communications materials for the EME programme
  • Contribute to learning and continuous professional development courses, seminars, lectures, and short courses within NETSCC.

  • Analyse data available to the directorate to support process improvements, improve understanding of the portfolio of research and of researchers who apply to the programme

  • Plan and deliver high qualityresearch on research projects, helping to define original research objectives and questions and sustaining a personal research plan.

Internal & External Relationships:
Internal: Colleagues at NETSCC, Wessex Institute and the University. In particular NETSCCconsultant advisors and senior scientific advisors, NETSCC research staff, Programme Managers and Information Scientists.
External: Board and Prioritisation Group members, staff within other funding agencies, and other partners as required.
Special Requirements:
The post holder will need to be able to attend whole day meetings with occasional overnight stays in London and other locations in the UK and to attend conferences for the purpose of disseminating research findings or promoting the EME programme.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in one of the biomedical sciences or a related discipline
First or good second class science degree
Experience of working in translational research in the NHS, academia or a commercial environment
Experience and/or demonstrable skills in critical appraisal, literature review and in quantitative research methods (e.g. elementary statistics)
Demonstrable experience of Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel and Powerpoint
Published research in a relevant discipline
Good understanding of research governance
