ANIMAL MOVEMENTS
Movements done~
Following last meeting and coordinators report a number of movements have taken place, however, due to various extenuating circumstances, this was notdone in the manner as was planned and identified at last meeting (tender & outsource). A major problem is the permits from Cape Nature, and a solution to this problem needs to be established between QPA & Cape Nature.
Thus the planned movements were not completed and this needs to be continued in 2010 as well as new movements on other properties. The subcommittee needs to meet again to plan capture 2010
2 females Bontebok Ridge to Kosierskraal (moved by Bernard and Tom)
1 female Vlakkenhuiwel to Bontebok Ridge (moved by Bernard and Tom)
1 male Elandsberg to Vlakkenhuiwel (moved by Bernard and Steve)
Movements planned for 2010~
(Sub committee needs to meet)
Still to move 1 male 2 females from iThemba (Hamish Curry)
Still to move 1 male 1 female Wedderwill (check this) (Steve Mitchell)
Still need to do Far Horizons, iThemba, Pampoenvlei, Boland Landbou, Kosierskraal
3 escapees from Wedderwil we attempt to catch or offer them at a discounted price to farmer where they are now. All female, but not needed for breeding.
2 very good males from emergency movements are in a holding camp at Elandsberg. Both where moved without permits as there was no time to organize this through Cape Nature.
Both are due to go to Kosierskraal.
Emergency movements~
The emergency movements where both young males that where being beaten up by the dominant stallion. Both situations where possibly caused by the small areas in which they where kept and the young males where unable to get far enough away from the dominant stallion.
1 male Vlakkenhuiwel to Elandsberg (Bernard called in Steve Mitchell, Tom Turner and vet Jannie van der Merwe)
1 male Far Horizons to Elandsberg (Bernard called in Hamish Curry and Steve Mitchell)
Animal’s Sold
The animals that were removed and sold to both Steve and Hamish need to be double checked re numbers from each property as well as through invoicing Patricia to please confirm invoicing and payments indeed done.

WEBSITE UPDATE
Jerome from Jamm Website is still to meet with Prof Harley to formalize the website once Prof Harley’s report accepted by SA Wildlife (still awaiting acceptance).
General
- The First International Conference on the Restoration of Endangered and Extinct Animals will take place at the Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Jastrzebiec near Warsaw, Poland, 17-19 May 2010.
Professor Ryszard Slomski, President of Organizing Committeesent the Quagga Project a specific invite to attend and present a paper on the Quagga Project.
Exco decided that it was important that the Quagga Project attend this, and asked Prof Eric Harley to attend and present a paper. Prof Harley’s main problem was not to just repeat our recent report in S A J Wildlife Res, so he made it as different as possible, whilst basically saying much the same as before. Fortunately we have enough F4 data now for that to be included, so that'a a major improvement, and he’s worked a different emphasis in the Figs so that this paper should complement, rather than just repeat, what was in the previous one. Another major difference was the inclusion in the Discussion section of our criteria for a 'Rau quagga'. This paper will be available on the website as soon as it has been presented
Attached to this report is the invitation sent by them

Hi Craig. Thanks for the swift response. With regards to the Agreement, let me try again. We may have to re-word it a little to suit our purposes. It’s not the care of the animals that is a concern, rather the matter of the landownership. As we are a government organisation we are not really the landowners, so I am not sure who can sign, maybe Jacob Zuma? Please leave it with me for a few weeks and I will update you accordingly.
Kind regards
Danny

Subject: RE: Zebra removal
Hello Danny
The current movement is the second in the reorganising of the herd, and it so happened that all your animals did not fit the current criteria for a quagga, so it was decided to sell them with others in similar situation at other locations
Whilst we are aware that you have not signed the agreement, it was not decided to exclude you totally from the project, and I am sure that with the next movement planned next year around April we would still look at your site, also you have been involved for some time
On a separate note, am I to report to Exco that you guys are not prepared to sign the agreement?
Please advise
Kind Regards
Craig Lardner

Subject: Zebra removal
Hi Craig. I hope you re well, long time since we chatted.
I received notice from the QPA of the removal of the four zebra’s from our property but I believe there was some delay. I chatted to Hamish Curry this morning to find out when he plans to remove the animals, he is going to phone you about it some time today.
I notified the staff at iThemba LABS that the animals were going to be removed, mainly to ensure them it is done professionally with vets in attendance etc. I also mentioned that I doubt we will receive more animals from the QPA in the future, because our corporate dudes are not happy to sign the QPA Agreement and I have not been to the last few QPA meetings (due to work commitments) and am therefore unsure of the future plans. I had a few responses, mainly stating that the zebra’s form an important part of the “vibe” here at iThemba and is there not some way we could keep them here.
Personally I feel it would be good to have a break for a month or two as I would like to de-worm our springboks and I believe the de-worming tablets are not good for zebra’s due to their different stomach arrangement or something like that?
In conclusion, could you let me know if the QPA intends to send more animals here in future? We are most happy to have them, they are now quite famous in the scientific world as all the visiting scientists are amazed they can perform high-tech physics experiments in the morning, then pop outside and photograph zebra’s at lunch time! We do not have the resources to purchase the animals (we considered that option as well) and I feel it is a lot of responsibility for a small organisation such as our club to suddenly own a herd of zebra’s. I am sure there are a whole bunch of potential costs and responsibilities that we are unaware of, so the current arrangement suits us fine.
I look forward to your response,
Kind Regards
Danny McGee

- Photographs constantly being asked by outside emails for various issues. We spoke about a “library” system in the US that we could keep these and have them rented out?
- Vredenheimhave requested that they have a link to their website regarding QPA. These animals at Vredenheim were the founder animals from Etosha (clearly not the offspring also there). They were sold to Vredenheim with the first “clean out” and as such are not quaggas as per our discussion last meeting
That said perhaps if they said on their site that these animals were the founder animals of the QP and no longer part of it, it may not harm the link to our website on theirs??
Comment?
