INSTRUCTIONS

In accordance with State requirements, each Resident will be formally assessed five (5) times during the two-year Residency period by his/her Mentor.Three (3) formative assessments will be completed during the Year 1 Residency (at the end of 4, 8 and 12 months), and one(1) additional formative assessment will be completed during the Year 2 Residency (at the end of 16months). Mentors will complete thisSummative Assessment Reportat the end of 19 months, which will include the Mentor’s recommendation to the NJ Department of Education for the Resident to receive Standard Principal Certification.Mentors are required to use the State-approved “Resident Assessment Rubric” and “Resident Assessment Criteria Chart” in the document entitled “Mentor Recommendation for Standard Principal Certification” (see attached) as a basis for their Summative Assessment Report and recommendation for Standard Principal Certification.

TheNJ-L2L Summative Assessment Report is based onthe Mentor’songoing observations, interactions and formal conferences with the Resident during the two-year Residency, and the Mentor’s review of evidence related to theResident’s: (1) completionof eight (8) Explorations into School Leadership Practice during the Year 1 Residency;(2) satisfactory completion of a job-embedded Action Research Project that addresses one or more of the barriers to effective teaching and learning identified by the Resident during his/her Year 1 Explorations; (3) satisfactory completion of the Action Research Presentation;(4) professional growth during Year 1 and Year 2 in the leadership knowledge, skills and personal dispositions indicated by the New Jersey Professional Standards for School Leaders; and (5) identification of 2-3 professional growth targets for development of the State-required Professional Growth plan (PGP) in year 3 of employment.

The Mentor will hold a conference with the Residentto review the draft of the Summative Assessment Report, the completed Resident Assessment Criteria Chart andrecommendation for Standard Principal Certification,and to provide feedback for continuing professional growth. Following this conference,the draft of the Summative Assessment Report will be shared electronically with the Residentfor his/her review and comments. The Resident will return the Summative Assessment Report electronically to the Mentorwho may modify the draft as he/she deems appropriate. A copy of the final Summative Assessment Reportwill beprovided to the Resident for inclusion in his/her Leadership Portfolio.

NOTE:

  • The signed original of the finalSummativeAssessment Reportwill be submitted by the Mentorto the NJ-L2L Program Coordinatorwithin two (2) weeks of the required Mentor/Resident Conference.
  • The following documents MUST be attached to the final Summative Assessment Report: (1) Resident Assessment Criteria Chart; (2) Action Research Project Assessment Report; and (3) Action Research Project Presentation Assessment Report.
  • NJ-L2L will transmit the Summative Assessment Report to the NJ Department of Education.

All information and discussions related to formative and summative assessments of the Resident are CONFIDENTIAL. A copy of all Formative and Summative Assessment Reports will be retained by NJ-L2L in the Resident’s file.Formative and Summative Assessment Reports will not be provided to the Resident’s school district or any agency or individual without the written request and consent of the Resident.

This Report will not be provided to the Resident’s school district or any agency or individual without the written request and consent of the Resident. Residents who disagree with the Mentor’s recommendation for Standard Certification have the right to appeal to the NJ Board of Examiners.
