Standards:

CTAE-FS-3 Learners use various communication skills in expressing and interpreting information.

AGD-4 Students will understand the importance of developing a project from concept thru completion.

Job Specifications:

Design a double sided, folded syllabus on legal paper in Indesign for the class you are registered for. Your design should include all text information provided, photos, graphic elements, headers, correct margins, gutters and formatting.

As an “advanced” student in Graphics you have an opportunity to continue the development of your introductory skills. By taking this course again, you have accepted that you are responsible, motivated, and interested in this field. You should have the initiative and desire to learn through practice; and will take this chance and use it to benefit you and your future.

Another opportunity that you have is to be creative, use your imagination and use your own ideas. There are many resources in our lab, and outside of school in your daily activities, for you to use in order to help you create and form ideas for your projects. However, it takes motivation and a desire to do well on your part.

  1. ALWAYS practice safe work habits. If you are found to be working in an unsafe manner there must be a remediation of the entire safety unit for this course. Absolutely NO HORSEPLAY!
  2. Eating and drinking is NOT permitted in the lab.

  7. LISTEN during instructions and demonstrations so your projects will look their best!

Consequences:

If anyone abuse privileges in this classroom i.e. naming files inappropriate names, inappropriate projects/subjects or internet searches, abusing equipment, promoting unsafe situations, or if you choose to use this class as wasted time…YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE IN THE LAB IN ANY WAY!

A parent/guardian will be contacted and you will be assigned bookwork for the rest of the semester.

Attendance:

Your attendance at school is very important. When you are not in school you cannot keep up with your program of student. In Graphics, it is not possible to take equipment and supplies home; therefore, try to be at school every day in order to keep up with assignments and projects.

Projects:

•A project list/course outline will be provided.

•Due Dates will be posted

•Late projects will be graded accordingly and at the discretion of the teacher.

Projects should not be late except in the case of excused absences.

The ability to meet deadlines is an important trait to be successful in this industry in the future.

•You can and probably will complete more projects than the minimum assigned.

All projects need to be turned in for a grade before taking them from this lab.

Live Work:

Live work will include a variety of tasks such as digital file preparation, image editing, digital file output, bindery, cost calculating/estimating and clean up. Jobs will be receipted through the school’s live work account.

•Portfolios should include any project examples, live work, sketches, writing samples, etc.

•The portfolio must be neat, clean, and presented in a professional manner.

•The portfolio will be graded every semester.

Articulation

An articulation agreement has been established between McEachern High School and the Art Institute of Atlanta in the area of Graphic Communications. The articulation agreements allow students in the Graphic Communications program to transfer credit hours to the college. The student must meet the required course competencies and receive at least a grade of 85 in the course to transfer credit to the schools. Upon graduation, the student must enroll at one of the colleges within one academic year of that graduation date. All articulated courses will be exempt from fees.

Industry Certification:

PrintED is administered by the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF), and is a national certification process based on industry standards for high school graphics courses.

McEachern High School can issue GAERF student certificates in the following 3 areas:

•INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS

•ADVERTISING DESIGN

•SCREEN PRINTING

The following requirements must be met in order to earn a certificate:

1. Mastery of 80% of the identified skills

2. Maintain an 85 or above average in Graphic Communications

3. Complete a minimum of 3 semesters

4. Pass an End-of-Pathway Exam

Formative Assessments ...... 25%

Consists of assignments given during class such as daily work, small projects, and tickets-out-the-door.

Summative Assessments ...... 40%

Includes written/performance tests and major project grades. Each project grade is derived from a combination of project completion, craftsmanship, creativity/design, use of typography, and the ability to follow directions. Students’ willingness to correct identified weaknesses will provide opportunities for grade improvement.

Mid-Term Exam...... 5%

Final Exam...... 20%

Assesses cumulative information for the entire year that includes a written exam, a performance exam, and a portfolio.

Employability Preparation...... 10%

Assesses career preparation, “Dress for Success”, time on task, cleaning work areas, and general work ethics.
