CONGRESSIONAL ART CONTEST GUIDELINES

General Guidelines

·  The competition is open to high school students who currently reside in the Third Congressional District of Texas. Please be aware that not all students who attend school in the Third Congressional District reside in the Congressman’s district. Art pieces from students who do not reside in the district will not be considered.

·  One entry per student.

·  A TYPED release form must be signed by the teacher and the student to certify the originality of the art piece. A parent/guardian signature is required on the Artwork Release portion of the form.

·  All art entered in the contest will be featured in a local art exhibit. When submitting art, please be sure it can be easily hung or set-up for display.

·  Artwork submitted must:

§  Be two-dimensional only

§  Not be larger than 30 inches by 30 inches to the outside dimensions of the frame (framing is required only of the First Prize-winning entry)

§  Be no more than 4 inches in depth

§  Weigh 15 pounds or less

·  Art work categories are as follows:

§  Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.

§  Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers

§  Collage: must be 2 dimensional

§  Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints

§  Mixed media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, etc.

§  Computer generated art

§  Photography

·  If the artwork is abstract in design, please indicate on the back side which side is up.

·  Each entry must be an original in concept, design and execution and may not violate any U.S. Copyright Laws.

Note: Any entry which has been reproduced from an existing photo, painting, or any other work produced by another person is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted.

·  Artwork must adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission. In accordance with this policy, exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed. The final decision regarding suitability for exhibition in the U.S. Capitol is left to a panel of qualified persons chaired by the Architect of the Capitol. While it is not the intent to censor any artwork, we do wish to avoid artwork that is potentially inappropriate for display at the local art exhibit and in the United States Capitol.
