The meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. by Patrick Kelley.

Principal Report

School Updates-

*PTA Back to a New Year Luncheon- it was a wonderful treat for the teachers last Friday. Thanks to Dionne for all of her hard work on it!

*Sunday evening the 5thgrade chorus presented for MLK day at Westfields High School. Special thanks to the music teachers and Brenda Johnson who coordinates the event for LCES.

*Mr. Kelly Gorman is doing a program on bullying prevention for Lees Corner staff and students in Feb/March. Video can be seen on the website of his PTA presentation.

*F3- (Fun Fit Fridays) is going really well.

*Math and Science night will be Feb 26th.

Guest Speakers:

Food Allergy Presentation by Kathryn Bernet

*1 in 13 children have a food allergy- about 2 per classroom. There are 8 foods that account for the majority of reactions: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish.

*Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that comes on quickly and may cause death. Trace amounts of a food allergen can cause a reaction in some people with food allergies. Food allergies is considered a physical or mental impairment (severe food allergy) under the Americas Disabilities Act of 1990.

*How can teachers remove food from some lessons and substitute it with something non edible?

*What events can the PTA adjust to allow students with food allergies to attend?

*Calling all families willing to help Katie spearhead this effort. (see attached powerpoint). Please contact Katie for more information.

Mr. Kelly Gorman presented on bullying.

*Verbal Judo. The de-escalation and the ability to move past the culture that supports bullying. The verbal judo program teaches victims to stand up for themselves and say Stop and move on. He teaches kids to identify body language and mental attitude.

*Feb 2nd teachers will get an in depth presentation from Mr. Gorman.

*Students will receive two 40 minutes presentations for K-2, 3-6, and at the end of Feb/early March he will go through all 5th and 6th grade classrooms during blizzard block.

*Parents are going to get involved via a tool called “Car Talks” which is a conversation starter for parents so they can discuss this all with their kids.

First VP

*Boosterthon Presentation- Jan 23rd from 12:30-2:00 All are welcome to come to this meeting but please RSVP to Julie Chang.

*The next dining day is Jan 27th at McDonalds.

Second VP

*The clothing drive was a great success with 8 full boxes of clothes going down to Bailey’s Elem.

Treasurer Report:

Amy Whiteman presented an update on the budget. No new activities reported this month. See PPT for details.

New Business-

*Jan 27 Dining Day at McDonalds

*6th Grade Basketball game is Friday, March 20th at 6 pm at Chantilly HS. Practices begin next Thursday.
