2018Longer term Fellowship Support

This form is to be completed for applications to TUF’s longer term Fellowship Support programme. Guidance and instructions on how to complete the form are included within. Please read them carefully before completing the form.

NB: Applications for The Urology Foundation longer term Fellowships are only open to:

  • Urological higher surgical trainees (in their final year of training)
  • Consultant urological surgeons
  • Academic urologists
  • Those based in the UK and Ireland to visit units abroad.

The Trustees of The Urology Foundation have made up to £30,000 available to support up to 3 urologists per annum who wish to seek a fellowship post abroad for a period of up to twelve months.

This is a competitive grant, judged by the Scientific and Education Committee.

Grants for visits are awarded on an annual basis.

1About TUF Longer Term Fellowship Awards

We believe that urology patients in the UK and Ireland deserve access to the most advanceddiagnostic tools and treatment options available.Observing colleagues in international centres of excellence helps to bring pioneeringtechniques and technology to the UK, and enable motivated and like-minded clinicians to discuss their clinical findingsin person and see new approaches first-hand.

The purpose of TUF’s Longer Term Fellowship Award is to enable a urologist or academic research urologist to undertake a visit to a distinguished unit or laboratory abroad, for a period of up to twelve months to acquire specialist knowledge or expertise, or to carry out a research project.

Criteria -Applicant must hold a post in the UK or Ireland and return to work in the UK or Ireland after the fellowship.The award is only open to:

  • Urological higher surgical trainees (in their final year of training)
  • Consultant urological surgeons
  • Academic urologists
  • Those based in the UK and Ireland to visit units abroad.

Award details - The value of the award is a share of, or up to a maximum of £30,000 and can be used for:

  • Economy class travel expenses for the fellow only
  • Housing expenses.
  • A justified subsistence allowance.
  • Research expenses will not be awarded; facilities should be provided by the host department.

The applicant is encouraged to seek matched funding to cover any remaining expenses, or other aspects of their Fellowship / visit abroad if travelling for more than six months.

On completion of your visit you are required to provide a report in layman’s terms of not more than two pages of A4 on your visit. NB: Payment is dependent upon receipt of this report. The report should focus on how this clinical visit will impact on your clinical practice and if possible will demonstrate how it will improve patient care.

1.1Selection Procedure

Applications will be reviewed by The Urology Foundation Scientific & Education Committee (SEC) and applicants should be notified of the outcome within one month.

The criteria for review will include:

  • An assessment of the centre for the proposed visit purpose.
  • Whether there already exist good opportunities within the UK to observe or practise the technique(s) proposed.
  • The suitability of the candidate will be taken into account i.e. stage of training, career objectives, research proposition (if applicable), etc.

4Budget

Please provide a clear indication of the expected (or known) travel and living costs for your visit.(TUF will only pay economy fares for travel.) Please note that TUF expects the visit to be minimum of 6 months in order to derive full benefit from the experience.

You are encouraged to seek matched funding to cover any remaining expenses, or other aspects of your Fellowship if travelling for more than six months. If you have already secured additional funding please state so below and what this funding is expected to cover.

NB: A proportion of the award will be released in advance, with the balance paid upon receipt of a satisfactory Report. Expenseswill only be paid upon production of receipts. If the submitted expenses differ substantively from the initial budget calculation below then TUF reserves the right to withhold the final payment until the disparities have been resolved to TUF’s satisfaction.

I certify that the information herein is true and complete to the best of my knowledge.

If awarded a grant, I agree to the following conditions:

  • That I take up the visit within a 12 month period of the award otherwise the grant may be forfeit.
  • I will notify The Urology Foundation in writing of any change of address or of any change in my status that may affect my ability to take up the Fellowship.
  • That I intend to return to work in the UK following my Fellowship.
  • That I acknowledge The Urology Foundation funding and the Fellowship in my CV.
  • That I will submit a brief report of my visit to TUF(max 2 sides A4) within 6 weeks of my return and agree that this may be used in TUF’s marketing & promotional material.
  • That I will submit my expenses and receipts in a timely fashion.
