Position Description

Lecturer in Speech Pathology

Position Context

The purpose of this position is to make a contribution to the School’s teaching, curriculum development and research in the field of paediatric speech pathology. The appointee will also contribute to the Faculty’s Common First Year (CFY) by undertaking Enquiry-Based Learning facilitation and coordinating the Discipline Mentor program for speech pathology students in the CFY.

A Level B academic will undertake teaching and research without the need for close supervision in his or her discipline or related area. In research and/or scholarship and/or teaching a level B academic will make an independent contribution through professional practice and expertise, and coordinate and/or lead the activities of other staff, as appropriate to the discipline.

A Level B academic will normally contribute to teaching at entry-level and honours and postgraduate levels and engage in scholarship and/or research and/or professional activities appropriate to his or her profession or discipline. He or she will normally undertake administration primarily relating to his or her academic activities at the institution and may be required to perform the full academic responsibilities and related administration for the coordination of an award program of the institution.

Specific Duties

  • Contribute to curriculum development in paediatric language for the School’s speech pathology programs
  • Initiate and develop course material
  • Conduct tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations and workshops and facilitate enquiry/problem-based learning tutorials
  • Prepare and deliver lectures and seminars
  • Conduct and coordinate marking and assessment
  • Undertake academic coordination roles
  • Supervise honours, Pass Degree and/or postgraduate research projects
  • Conduct research
  • Make a contribution to the speech pathology profession in the area of paediatric practice
  • Consult with students
  • Attend to a broad arrange of administrative functions, the majority of which are related to the subjects in which the academic teaches
  • Attend School and/or Faculty meetings and play a role in planning or committee work

Key Selection Criteria

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in speech pathology and eligibility for membership of Speech Pathology Australia
  • Doctoral or Masters level qualification or equivalent standing
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in speech pathology practice, with particular expertise in the area of paediatric practice
  • A record of demonstrable scholarly and/or professional achievement in paediatric speech pathology
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in areas relevant to the responsibilities of this position
  • Understanding of contemporary issues in speech pathology education, research and clinical practice
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Highly developed organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A high level of computer literacy

Desirable Attributes

  • Publication record in peer reviewed journals and/or scholarly books
  • Experience in enquiry/problem-based learning
