Robert Ludlum’s, ‘The Bourne Identity’ is a book about a man with no past and who may have no future, a man who’s lost his memory and is on a journey to persue who he is. Jason Bourne, although being the main character, would not have survived if he did not receive help from Mary St Jacques, without D’Anjou feeding him information, and if Washburn had not saved his life.
Jason Bourne may be the focus of the story but without the help of Mary St Jacques he would not have survived. Jason Bourne was being hunted by two men when he decided to grab Mary St Jacques so he could blend in as they were looking for a man alone. Mary St Jacques frightened says “You’re out of the hotel; that’s what you said you wanted let me go and I won’t say anything. I promise you!” without the cooperation of Mary St Jacques Bourne would have been spotted by the crafty, devious killers and therefore would not have survived, but since he was with Mary St Jacques he blended in and the killers were unable to identify him as they were looking for a man alone. It should now be clear although Bourne is the focus of the story without the help of others throughout the story he would not have survived death.
Without Bourne there is no story but without others there is no Bourne. As he is on his journey, he is fed information multiple times by D’anjou. Bourne is seeking information when he comes across D’anjou. Bourne says to D’anjou, “Tell me! For Christ’s sake, tell me! Who is it? Who is my employer, d’Anjou?” in reply D’anjou tells him the employer. This indicates that Bourne although an intelligent character needs the help of others because instead of trying to persue something he didn’t know he just asked. From this you can further understand that Bourne is the focus of the story though he needs the help of others to survive.
Jason Bourne is the main character but without the help of other people Jason Bourne would not have survived as long as he did. This is because Jason Bourne when drowning at sea was picked up by a boat and operated on by Dr Washburn a drunk who had to become sober in order to save a man who he did not know or care for. In the book it states “Then he performed the most delicate piece of work he had attempted since his dismissal from MacLean’s Hospital in London” this further supports the argument as when Jason Bourne was almost dead he was saved by someone else. If Washburn had not become sober Bourne would not have survived as long as he did.
It should now be much more understandable that although Bourne was the main character without the help of others he would not have survived. Bourne would not have survived if he did not receive help from Mary St Jacques, without D’Anjou feeding him information, and if Washburn had not saved his life. Bourne went through hell having lost his memory, he was lost and confused though through the help of other people he found himself and he survived.
