Attendance Reminder: Absent Students May Not
Participatein After-School Activities
All students must be in attendance during the school day and attend class in order to be eligible to attend after-school activities. This applies to all practices, rehearsals, set building, meetings, awards presentations etc. Students must report to school by 11 am to be eligible to participate in after-school activities. If a student is too ill to be in school, then the student is too ill to participate in other activities. Please note: Special circumstances (such as funerals and college visits) are usually exempt from this rule, as long as the school is aware of the matter. This makes communication from parents or guardians regarding tardies and absences even more crucial. Please remember to call the school attendance mail box (236-4221, press 1) as soon as you can so we know where the students are.
It’s (Finally) Here!
A Christmas gift to the Northwest Catholic community: a new and improved web site
Under the guidance of Finalsite (our new web site company) and Laurie Kramer Murphy ’81 (our very able account manager there), born just a few days before the Christmas break. Switching to this new vendor means that control of the content is in our hands, instead of a third party’s. The result? The web site will now have updated and accurate information and photos, and is intended to serve as a worthy companion to the other chief resource for parents: Edline. Please let us know how you like it! (Contact Michelle Murphy, .)

Saturday Night Live a Huge Success!
The receipts have been tallied. The bills have been paid. And the profits are incredible! Co-Chairs Carol Ciotto and Gail Riley are delighted to announce that the 24th Annual Saturday Night Live netted a profit of $37,600!! Many, many thanks to all the parents, alumni parents, alums, faculty, and staff who bought tickets, donated items, baked desserts, set up, served, or cleaned up at the big event – as usual, this was a real team effort, and this success is truly the success of all. Mark your calendars: Next year’s Saturday Night Live -- the 25th anniversary edition! -- will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008. Plans are already in the works to mark this Silver Jubilee in grand style. Stay tuned!
It’s That Time Already: Course Selection for 2008-09
Course selection is a very important process; it should be accomplished in consultation with parents, teachers, and guidance counselors. This year, the process will begin on January 23, 2008.
During assemblies that day, guidance counselors will explain the scheduling process, distribute the Program of Studies book and Student Course Request sheets, and remain available for any questions. From Jan. 23-25, students will have teachers recommend and approve their classes by signing their Course Request sheets. Students should take the Program of Studies book home and confer with their parents; over the weekend of Jan. 26-27, they should bring their Course Request sheets home for their parents to sign.
To complete the process, students must enter their course selections for 2008-09 through Edline between Jan. 28 and Feb. 1, 2008. (This process will be explained in school, and directions will be posted on Edline.) Sheets must be returned to homeroom teachers by February 1, 2008.
Counselors and Academic Departments will review selections after the data have been entered. Note: Everyone involved with the course selection process -- students, teachers, and parents -- must sign the Student Course Request sheet.
Jan. 23Assemblies for explanation
Jan. 23–25Teachers recommend classes/sign sheets
Jan. 26–27Parents sign sheets
Jan. 28-Feb. 1Students complete selection through Edline
Feb. 1Signed sheet due to homeroom teacher
It is important for students to consider an entire academic year during the course selection process. The transition from grade to grade involves an increased work load and more difficult concepts. Higher-level classes, honors courses, Advanced Placement work, and leadership roles in the arts and athletics all require more time and effort.
It is important to carefully consider the courses before committing to a schedule for the year. Students may not drop or change a course unless an exceptional situation exists. This status will be determined by the Academic Dean, after consultation with the student’s guidance counselor and teacher. A written note from a parent is also required.
A student who withdraws from a class after 12 class days into a course (yearlong or semester) will receive the grade of “W.” A student who withdraws after completing more than half the course will receive a final grade of “WP” (Withdrawn Passing) or “WF” (Withdrawn Failing). No credit will be given for the course.

*Students are to report to their second period exam room each day at 10 AM. The exam will begin at 10:10 and finish at 11:40.
During exams, students must be in complete uniform. There is no homeroom period; students report directly to their exam rooms. They should remain in the room (even if finished with the exam) until the bell rings for the end of the exam period, or until dismissal is given from the office at the end of the exam period. Students need to report to school only for exam periods. If there is no exam scheduled, there is no need to report to school. Students who may be in the building during a scheduled exam time and do not have an exam must go to the cafeteria or the library and remain there. (Please note that the food service will be available until 10:00 am.) Out of consideration for those taking exams, students may not go to lockers or remain in the corridors during the exam periods. Buses will leave at 12:08 PM. Please remember that exams will not be graded for student whose tuition and fees are not paid.
The NorthwestCatholicHigh School grading system utilizes quarter grades, examination grades, semester averages and final grades. All of these grades will be shown on the report card. Semester averages will include 40% of each of the quarter grades and 20% of the exam grade. Final averages in yearlong courses will be comprised of 20% of each quarter’s grade and 10% of each exam. It is important to be aware of the impact of each marking period and the examination on the semester average.
