The Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Surrey is pleased to announce a limited number of bursaries for its range of Masters programmes in 2011-12.
What does each bursary provide?
- a contribution of circa £1,000 towards tuition fees (£4,200 for Home/EU students, £10,000 for Overseas students in 2010-11).
What will my responsibilities be?
- To make good academic progress (failing this, monies paid in advance are liable for recovery by the University) resulting in successful completion of the programme with the award of a Masters degree.
Who is eligible to apply for the bursary?
- Any candidate who applies by 1st June 2011at the latest for one of the CTS Masters programmes on a full-time basis to commence in September/October 2011 can also apply for a CTS bursary by the same date.
Who is not eligible to apply for the bursary?
- Students whose applications to a CTS Masters programme have already been rejected.
- Students whose studies are already being fully or substantially funded by another body (e.g. home university, home government, etc.).
How do I apply for the bursary
The following documents will need to be prepared:
- a personal statement in English outlining why you deserve to be awarded the bursary (maximum 300 words); this is different from the more general and optional personal statement on the application form.
- The personal statement for the bursary must be completed on the form at the end of this document.
Personal statements which are not submitted on the attached form and/or which exceed the word limit will be automatically rejected.
- a completed application form for your chosen programme(see Postgraduate Programmes page on the CTS website at and relevant documents including:
- copies of degree certificate/s;
- final or interim transcripts where the final award has not yet been made;
- Englishlanguage qualifications.
Please make sure that your academic referees are forewarned about your application and understand the urgency of responding when approached by the University.
How will the awards be decided?
- The bursaries will be awarded on the grounds of merit, including a demonstrably excellent academic performance to date, a convincing personal statement, excellent academic references, and evidence of strength in English-language proficiency.
- The Review Committee will consist of a panel of CTS staff.
- Applications will be reviewed in June 2011 and candidates will be informed of the outcome by email early in July 2011. If no response is received within one week, the offer will automatically be withdrawn.
- The best applications will be ranked in order of merit; if an award is not accepted by a selected candidate, it will be offered to the next candidate on the list, and so on subject to the criteria of the award.
- The decision of the Review Committee will be final.
- We regret that we will be unable to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.
- The CTS reserves the right not to make any awards in the current round if applications are not of sufficient quality or do not meet other criteria as outlined above.
