How to dress:

Some of our runners, mostly during the Club season, have had to run in temperatures as low as –17 degrees Fahrenheit, some in the snow, some in the rain, and some in the wind. We have found that the following works well to keep us warm and dry depending on the quality of the items and how long we are in those conditions. Peel off layers as needed:

Cold

First layer - Thermals or spandex. There are other, specialty, fabrics that will keep you warm.

These make the best base layers, because they allow for competitive movement, but can be

very expensive.

Second layer – Uniform…only if competing.

Third layer - Fleece or cotton warm-ups (hoody and sweats). This layer (at least the sweat pants) is

not usually worn during competition but does provide a good amount of warmth.

Fourth layer – Windproof/Waterproof layer. This should be a thin, lightweight material and can be

used during competition. Gortex is a high end, expensive example. There are other

impermeable material that will do just as well.

Fifth layer – Thicker coat or jacket and pants. This should be wind or waterproof to keep warm

before and after competitions. Gear made for skiing works well here.

Rain/Snow

movement, but can be very expensive.
