2013-2014 Dance Team Parent Meeting

March 17th, 2013

FC Dance Team Expectations

A. Purpose

Each member of the Fort Calhoun Dance Team should promote and uphold school spirit, develop a sense of sportsmanship among students, and contribute to a fun and safe atmosphere that positively represents our school.

B. Communication

Communication between coach, team members, and parents is of utmost importance. Communication between coach and parents will be primarily through e-mail, and telephone when needed. That information will be handed out when the team is revealed. It is the responsibility of the team members to communicate with their parents any information that is received. A phone tree with the team members’ numbers will be distributed at this time as well.

C. Attendance

Attendance is an extremely important aspect of this team. It is important to me that the girls be involved in many different activities, and I understand time conflicts. We will build practice schedules the best that we can around other sports, activities, and events. There will be a zero tolerance policy for unexcused absences- meaning not showing up for a practice or performance without a phone call first will result in performance suspension(s). More than two suspensions will result in dismissal from the team.

D. Practice

Practices for the 2013-2014 dance team will begin the first week of June and will be held one day a week throughout the summer and on Sunday evenings from 4-6 p.m. during school year. A practice schedule will be set once the team is decided. In the past, the girls have gotten together in the mornings before school as well. It is important to note that this is not required, other than on performance days. Team members are also expected to practice routines on their own time.

E. Fundraising/Costs

Fundraising is optional, but extremely helpful in paying for uniform, camp, and other costs. A representative from Deli International will meet with the new team on Monday, March 25th after school to discuss fundraising options. Money raised from fundraising is kept individual- each girl will receive the profits they individually have earned. None of that money is put into the dance-team joint account.

Account balances for uniform costs will need to be paid to the high school office (Patty Appel) by June 1, 2013. I plan to hand out uniforms shortly after this date.

F. Uniforms

Uniforms will remain the same as last year. Past dance team members may be willing to sell their things to new members. This can help to save a lot of money. Please see Varsity Catalog for a list of items. A Varsity representative will be in Fort Calhoun on Monday, March 25th at 4:00 to measure the members and order needed materials.

Outfits for camp may be purchased closer to camp time. They will not be ordered from Varsity.

All girls are expected to have their own black jazz dance shoes. We try our very best to keep the cost down.

G. Eligibility

Dancers must meet grade and attendance requirements as set forth by the Fort Calhoun School District. They must follow all expectations as outlined in the Fort Calhoun School and Athletic handbooks.

H. Handbook

A “Dance Team” handbook will be created and signed by the 2013-2014 dance team members and parents. In it will include additional rules and expectations set forth and agreed upon by the team, as well as consequences for not following them. A copy will be given to all members and to the Athletic Director.

I. Camp

Typically, dancers attend a summer camp for three to four days in June or July. Here they learn multiple routines to be learned throughout the year. Cost for camp ranges between $100 to $200 per member, depending on where the camp is held. More information will be provided once the team is determined and a summer practice schedule is created.

J. Additional Info

·  Thoughts and concerns from parents are welcome at any time and taken into consideration. Final decisions regarding music and performance attire are made by the coach and athletic director.

·  Parents of dance team members are expected to pay admission to all events they attend (no matter if their child is dancing, they’re just going to the event for halftime, it’s the little girl’s dance camp, etc.)
