PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine surfaces to receive MSI Precast Stone Veneer.

B. Notify Architect of conditions that would adversely affect installation.

C. Do not begin surface preparation or installation until unacceptable conditions are corrected.

D. Do not begin installation until backing structure is plumb, bearing surfaces are level, and substrates are clean and properly prepared.

E. Verify location and secure installation if shelf angles are required.

3.2 SURFACE PREPARATION

A. Exterior Untreated Wood Installation: For exterior untreated wood installation a moisture barrier, such as 15Ibs felt or a synthetic barrier is required.

B. Exterior Treated Wood Installation: No moisture barrier is required when using treated plywood.

C. Interior Wood Installation: No moisture barrier is required.

D. Interior Drywall: MSI veneer stone can be installed over drywall.

1. Hit one stud per stone, OR

2. Use some type of drywall anchor.

E. Block Installation: MSI can be installed over block with a masonry screw to apply stone to block. It is recommended that the block be sealed before MSI veneer stone installation.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Starter Strip:

1. New starter strip is to be placed at bottom elevation of project. To install Starter Strip measure up 1 1/2" from the bottom of your project area, chalk a line to mark where your Starter Strip will be installed,. For multiple Starter Strips be sure to continue your line the entire length of the project area. Starter Strip is not always necessary, but the bottom section of the first row of stone may not be as tight as when using the Starter Strip.

2. The screws need to be drilled through the "V" channel of the Starter Strip (d1) and will be drilled directly onto your pre-measured and marked line, placing a screw every 12-16 inches along the Starter Strip. Each strip needs to be leveled.

B. First Row of MSI Precast Stone Veneer:

1. When inside and/or outside corners are present, start with inside corners first, then outside corners., finally fill in between with flats. The first row locks onto the Starter Strip and the stones work better from left to right.

2. At the end of the each row, measure and make the appropriate cut, using the remaining piece to begin next row. Screw into framing members when possible.

C. Following Rows of MSI Precast Stone Veneer:

1. The second row and all following rows will stack and fasten directly onto the previous row of MSI stone. Make cuts as necessary, making sure to stagger each row.

2. Use cut pieces in and throughout the project.

D. Finishing:

1. M-Trim should be considered as the 1st option.

2. Universal Trim: Universal Trim a 2"x20" trim piece. It can be used to finish the top of a project area, to trim around windows and doors, or to butt the stone to another surface. Use a polyurethane construction adhesive to attach the Universal Trim.

3. Piecing the Stone: Cut to height and use a polyurethane construction adhesive to attach the stone. The plastic railing may need to be cut to ensure a tight lock and finish.

In some situations, pre-drilling a hole may be necessary to attach the last course with a mechanical fastener, i.e. galvanized screws. Use coated screws for exterior applications.

E. Cutting and Fitting:

1. MSI can be cut easily with a diamond blade, either by dry cutting or wet. Cut and fit thin veneer stone for chases, pipes, conduit, sleeves, grounds, and other penetrations and adjacent materials.

2. Coordinate with other work to provide correct size, shape, and location.

3.4 CLEANING

A. MSI should only be washed with water. Pressure washing is not recommended.

B. Do not use harsh cleaning materials or chemicals that could damage stone.

C. Do not use metal brushes or acids for cleaning.

3.5 PROTECTION

A. Protect installed MSI precast stone veneer to ensure that, except for normal weathering, stone will be without damage or deterioration at time of Substantial Completion.

B. Touch-up, repair, or replace damaged stone before Substantial Completion.
