Suitable for all year levels. Students work cooperatively in small and large groups to traverse a variety of bridges, foot cables, swings and ropes. Develop an awareness and understanding of the importance of working collaboratively and strategically to complete physical challenges
Bouldering / Low / low level climbing <2.4m / Indoor climbing wall is located in a large shed. Low level section (below 2.4m) is used. / DEEC / DEEC Staff. Adult helper(s) required / Climbing clothing *2 / Induction of rules and safe operating procedures. Progressive, sequential skill development.
Suitable for all year levels. Enjoy low level climbing (below 2.4 m) on Daradgee’s indoor climbing wall. Climbing abilities develop from simple hand and foot placement, to more complex bouldering requiring passing others and blindfold bouldering etc. Students develop strategies and skills to overcome physical and emotional challenges
Top Roping / High / High level climbing on belay to a height of 6m / Indoor climbing wall located in a large shed.
Most situations will use fixed anchor belay points. On some occasions alternate belay systems can be employed.
Harnesses & helmets are fitted and worn. / DEEC / DEEC Staff. Adult helper(s) required / Climbing clothing *2 / Induction of rules and safe operating procedures. Progressive, sequential skill development.
Adults are inducted and signed off as competent to assist as belays.
Suitable for years 5 and above *3. Achieve personal climbing challenges during high level climbs (up to 6 metres) on Daradgee’s indoor climbing wall. A strong base of knowledge and understanding and associated skills are developed to achieve successful, safe climbing. A basic range of climbing techniques are demonstrated to ensure safe climbing. Competency with carabinas, ropes and associated equipment is developed. Students develop strategies and skills to overcome physical and emotional challenges. Full safety gear provided. Extra adults will require onsite training to assist with belay duties.Shorts - mid length (tights suitable). Shirts and enclosed shoes
Faulty Towers / High / indoor climbing on milk crate stacks / Students climb up a tower built of crates whilst on belay using the DEEC indoor climbing facility.
Harnesses & helmets are fitted and worn. / DEEC / DEEC Staff. Adult helper(s) required / Climbing clothing *2 / Induction of rules and safe operating procedures. Progressive, sequential skill development.
Adults are inducted and signed off as competent to assist as belays.
Suitable for years 6 and above*3. Teams alternate through a variety of roles while competing to build and climb a milk crate tower. A basic range of climbing techniques are demonstrated to ensure safe climbing. Competency with carabinas, ropes and associated equipment is developed. Students develop strategies and skills to overcome physical and emotional challenges. Full safety gear provided.
Extra adults will require onsite training to assist with belay duties.
Farmyard / Med / Students observe and interact with animals, recycle, care for animals and some gardening / Correct animal handling techniques - demonstrated and supervised.
Some tools are used. / DEEC / DEEC Staff. Adult helper(s) required / Sun safe clothing *1 / Demonstration of rules and safe operating procedures. Correct procedures for feeding, handling, cleaning, equipment use are understood. Good hygiene and hand washing.
Suitable for all year levels. Complete a range of tasks including recycling compost, gardening, feeding and handling live animals and observing chicks hatch in an incubator. Develop an understanding of a range of alternate waste management and recycling strategies and the needs of farm animals and gardens. Can be extended to incorporate photography. Expands to investigate Adaptations and Life cycles in the farm.
Snake Talk / Low / Students meet our Coastal Carpet Pythonlearn interesting facts about snakes and their place. / Ask questions relating to snakes, view a PowerPoint
Touch our resident Coastal Carpet Python if desired. / DEEC / Daradgee Staff. / N/A / Head is kept away from students at all times. Rules are explained regarding correct treatment of python. The python is non-venomous.
Suitable for all year levels. Meet and interact with Roxanne our beautiful Coastal Carpet Python. Develop an awareness of the needs of Australian native snakes, the role they play in the environment and snake safety. Expands to investigate Adaptations and Life Cycles of Coastal Carpet Pythons.
Cooking / Low / Preparing fresh ingredients for meals (eg.pizza) / Rolling pins, trays, hair nets, tongs etc. / DEEC / DEEC Staff. Adult helper(s) required / Enclosed shoes, hair nets when preparing food. / Demonstration of rules and safe operating procedures. Book the Cook alerts staff to allergies. Good hygiene and handwashing req.
Suitable for all year levels. Students engage in preparation of food such as rolling pizza bases, topping pizzas, threading kebabs, making sandwiches etc. Cooking and cutting processes are carried out by DEEC staff.
Cookery - Food Handling&Equip.use / Med / Prepare and store food
Use a range of specialised equipment. / Examples of equipment used include: Dishwasher, cutlery, crockery, coffee machine, toaster, electric juicer, urn, dough maker, and microwave. / DEEC / Daradgee Staff. Adult supervision as required. / Enclosed shoes, hair nets when preparing food. / Induction of rules and safe operating procedures. Care taken with regards to hot surfaces, gas flames, radiating heat, steam, hot water, cleaning, disinfecting, safe food handling and storage.
Year level appropriate. Students engage in preparation of food such as toast for breakfast of using the coffee machine when in secondary school.
Boating / Med / Boat trip along the North Johnstone River / Students take a boat cruise.

Aquatic - North Johnstone River/Bruce Highway Bridge to Innisfail. Estuarine - Innisfail to Coconuts/Coquette Point.
Boating and fishing / High / Boat trip along the North Johnstone River to Coconuts – some line fishing from boat (handlines only). / Students take a boat cruise.

Induction of rules and safe operating procedures for handlines/rods, fish hooks, yabby pumps, baiting, landing fish etc. Sunglasses worn for eye protection when fishing.
Suitable for all year levels*4. Students board the Daraji Sunbird North Johnstone River Catchment - Partially smooth water - cruise the river and recreational fish (Aquatic) aboard the vessel.

Polly Creek / Med / Visit to freshwater creek to assess water quality. Followed up with a swim. / Nature viewers will be used for catching and containing Benthic Macro Invertebrate. Polly Creek

Suitable for all year levels. Students depart from Daradgee base-camp to visit Polly Creek as part of their school camp experience. Supervised swimming and wading at Polly Creek.
Team Challenges / Med / Teams/pairs & individuals engage in challenges building on strengths /weaknesses, communication, decision making, sharing & relationships / Ropes, hoops, timber planks, nets, bamboo poles etc. / DEEC / DEEC Staff. Adult helper(s) required / Sun safe clothing *1 / Consider students size, weight, strength, skill level etc. when grouping/pairing. Induction of rules and safe operating procedures. Check activity spaces & equip. for defects, faults, sharp edges, fatigue, pot holes and loose surfaces.
Suitable for all year levels. Teams, pairs & individuals engage in a range of challenges building on everyone’s strengths/weaknesses, communication, decision making, sharing and relationships.
Catapults / Med / Constructing bamboo catapults in teams using knots. Finishes off with a water-bomb fight / Bamboo, ropes, giant elastic launchers, water balloons, safety glasses / DEEC / DEEC Staff. Adult helper(s) required / Sun safe clothing*1 & safety glasses. / Induction of rules and safe operating procedures eg. for carrying poles. Sunglasses worn during all phases of firing.
Suitable for years 5 and above *3. Students are involved in lashing together bamboo posts to build catapults.

Slip ‘n’ Slide / Med / Students can get wet slipping and sliding on the slope leading to the oval / Slip ‘n’ slide, hose, detergent / DEEC / DEEC Staff lead, then followed through by Adult helper(s) / Sun safe clothing*1 / Slide set up following CARA safely procedure & by DEEC staff. Pre slide explanation & demo.
Strict rules eg. slide on belly or knees, loose jewellery removed. Adults control use of detergent, plastic hosed and kept cool
