GIANO DELL’UMBRIA - HISTORY
Giano dell’Umbria is a little medieval town. The ancient village is settled among the unique green hills of Monti Martani, covered by vast olive fields. The Umbrian centre is famous for the “Vie dell’Olio” (the olive oil ways), an yearly exhibition occurring each December from the 8th to the 14tth. If you stay in Giano you can go trekking (footing or riding) and you can also taste the good cuisine with its local typical food. The little town is placed in the centre of Umbria region and as a tourist you can easily drive to cities like Assisi, Spoleto, Todi, Deruta, Gubbio, Perugia and Terni.
Giano dell’Umbria was ruled by Spoleto government from the second half of the thirteenth century until the beginning of the nineteenth century, but it has always remained independent and has itself ruled over its lands including Montecchio and Castagnola areas. Its small castle has been founded on two other fortified buildings. It is settled on the top of the hill and ends becoming the “Palazzo Pubblico” (government palace) and St. Michele’s Church (XIII cent.). Moreover the preserved medieval walls still contain some Roman ruins.
Many churches in Giano’s area witness the importance of this town. The most famous one is St. Francesco’s Church, just outside the city walls. This church has only one nave as the typical structure of the mendicant’s buildings and it transmits the Franciscan cultural message translated in the Crucifix Chapel’s fresco of the sky. This fresco has probably been painted by Giovanni da Corraduccio at the beginning of the XV century. The originally medieval church of St. Maria has been modified for some restorations during the fifth and seventh centuries. In the other hand, the church of St. Biagio finds its origin in the sixth century.
