Laws of Motion Station Lab

1) State Newton’s First Law of Motion:

2) State Newton’s Second Law of Motion:

3) State Newton’s Third Law:

4) Which of the above laws is related to the formula F=ma?

5) What is inertia (define it)?

6) What law of motion is most associated with inertia?

A) FirstB) SecondC) Third

Station 1

Push a chair two meters. Estimate the time it took. Now push the chair two meters with a person in it. Estimate the time it took.

7) Which chair took longer to move two meters:

A) Empty ChairB) Chair containing a person

8) Where was the friction located in this activity?

9) Name the law of motion we are focusing on in this activity.

A) FirstB) SecondC) Third

Station 2

Two people face each other in rolling chairs. Put your hands up and push off without your feet dragging. Observe the distance each chair has been pushed from the force applied.

10) Name the two people in the chairs.

11) Who appears to be lighter in weight?

12) Who moved a greater distance?

13) If the same force is used by each person in this activity, should the lighter or heavier person move a greater distance? Why?

14) Name the law of motion we are focusing on in this activity.

A) FirstB) SecondC) Third

Station 3

Place the table cloth on the table with the plastic dishes on top. Grab the edge of the cloth and pull quickly, straight out.

15) What happened to the dishes? Why?

16) Use a diagram to show all the forces acting on/around the dishes.

17) Name the law of motion we are focusing on in this activity.

A) FirstB) SecondC) Third

18) How is inertia related to this station?

Station 4

Place a coin on the outside of your elbow. Balance it there. Quickly grab for it with your hand (same hand as the elbow where the coins are).

19) Were you able to catch the coin in your hand?

A) YesB) no

20) How many coins could you catch?

21) Name the law of motion we are focusing on in this activity.

A) FirstB) SecondC) Third

Station 5

Take a cup and place an index card on top. Place a coin on the center of the card. Quickly pull the card (or flick it) out from under the penny.

22) What happened to the coin?

A) Falls outside the cupB) Falls inside the cupC) Stays in place

23) Name the law of motion we are focusing on in this activity.

A) FirstB) SecondC) Third

24) Diagram the forces acting at this station

Station 6

Place the weight on the cart. Roll the cart forward with a quick start (shove it!). Observe the movement of the weight.

25) How did the weight move as the cart was shoved forward?

A) did not moveB) weight moved forwardC) weight moved back

Now gently push the car forward….and suddenly stop it….

26) How did the weight move as the cart was stopped suddenly?

A) did not moveB) weight moved forwardC) weight moved back

27) ) Name the law of motion we are focusing on in this activity.

A) FirstB) SecondC) Third

28) If you were in a Ford Mustang, and not wearing your seatbelt….and were traveling at 30mph, would you stay in place if the car struck a tree? Explain.

29) Diagram the two motions in this activity showing the forces and resulting motion.
