GATHERING SONG (choir and congregation, singing together)

Gather us, O God, body, spirit, soul and mind.

Gather us, O God, one in union now with you.

CALL TO WORSHIP Janita Byars, Liturgist

One:You speak, God – you always speak,

All:if we will but listen;

One:All we need to do is pause, and turn our attention

to the song singing from the heavens,

All:and whispering in the wind;

One:to the flight of the dove,

All:and the touch of its wings on our heads;

One:to the giggling of the water,

All:and the mark it leaves in our hearts;

One:Your voice comes to us in faithful surround sound,

All:beckoning us to join the chorus, share in the dance,

and extend the invitation into all the earth.

One:You speak, God – you always speak;

All:and joyfully, we are listening.

*HYMNNo. 612 We Praise You, O God Kresmer

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION Liturgist

One: Creating, Calling, and Faithful God, we come to this time and place

to be with you, to worship you, to learn from you,

and to listen again to you calling our names.

All: God, you love us but we have not loved you; you call, but we have not listened. We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. We have gone along with evil, prejudice, warfare, and greed. Help us to face up to ourselves, so that, as you move toward us in mercy, we may repent, turn to you, receive forgiveness, and be remade, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

*ASSURANCE OF GOD’S FORGIVENESS

*RESPONSE: (congregation and choir singing together)

Don’t be afraid, my love is stronger, my love is stronger than your fear.

Don’t be afraid, my love is stronger and I have promised,

Promised to be always near.

*SHARING THE PEACE

WE GROW AS WE LISTEN TO GOD’S WORD

This is where children belong. – James Ritchie

(Following the message, children may go with their teachers to children’s church on the second floor of the education building where they may be picked up after worship. Nursery care is available for our youngest children.)

CALL TO SHARE OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS

Offertory - Christ, Our Lord, To Jordan Came arr. J. William Greene

Christ, our Lord, to Jordan came, There to follow God’s command,

Living Word, baptized by John, Our great treasure and God’s Son.

There with Christ are we all washed, Cleansed from evil evermore,

Just as with Him on the cross Death dies as new life is born.

Then the dove came down from heav’n, Spirit of the living God

Floating down upon His Son, A new baptism from on high.

On that day grace came anew so that we could fully know

That God with us still shall dwell, Bringing us the words of life.

Thus disciples are we all, Living out Christ’s mystic visi’n.

Our baptism like his own, Pouring God into our souls.

Star Child born in a manger bed, Angels watch above,

Star Child, weaving a golden thread of redeeming love.

This, then, is the King of Kings; God’s gift to the world He brings;

Love born on a winter’s night By starlight, starlight.

FOOD PANTRY. First Presbyterian continues to support the food pantry at our next door neighbor, First Covenant Church. Their food pantry is open one day per month (usually the third Tuesday) and is always in need of supplies. The food pantry this month will be held on January 19 so any foods brought by January 17 will be taken to First Covenant. If you would like to help, please bring any nonperishable food and/or personal items to the SJM Fellowship Hall and place in the basket near the kitchen door.
