Rationale for Narrative Prompt: The purpose of using the introductory texts is to teach students to closely read. In order to assess whether students have learned the transferrable skill(s), this writing prompt asks students to reflect on how they read versus on what they read.

Writing Situation: Reading texts closely to get to a deep level of understanding is an important skill to have. Think about the ways that you examined the texts in this unit. Think about how your close reading strategies helped you understand the texts in more depth. Also, consider any struggles or confusion that you have with using any of the strategies.
Writing Directions: You have just read a number of texts that included different mediums: photos, video(s), and written text. In a multi-paragraph response, describe:
- the purpose of rereading texts.
- strategies that you successfully used and why they were successful.
- strategies that were least successful and why.
- one strategy in which you would like to grow your proficiency.

Writing Situation: You have read a text in class to practice close reading. Your teacher would like to know more about how you approached this task.
Writing Directions: Write a reflective, response using language from the Reading Closely Checklist.
- Assess your close reading performance on [this assignment]. Explain how well you approached the text, how well you questioned the text, and to what extent you were able to analyze the details you found.
- Explain which area on the Reading Closely Checklist that you could have improved in during this performance.
- Finally, explain which area in the Reading Closely Checklist you would like to grow your skills in and why.

Writing Situation:You have spent weeks learning to closely read several texts. Through the process we have spent time in metacognitive self-reflection, as well as examining what the texts say.
Writing Directions: In an essay, tell the story of your reading closely journey. What have you experienced, discovered and learned within the unit?
- Describe how you experienced the process of learning to closely read.
- Explain, what do you know now about reading closely that you didn’t know before?
- Write a reflective summary of your experience with one of the texts. Describe what it was like to closely read it and what you discovered through the process.
