Information about the School, Department and post
About our School
Dame Alice Owen’s School is a mixed, partially selective secondary school with over 1,460 registered students and a vibrant and highly successful sixth form. Our school was founded 400 years ago by Dame Alice Owen, a remarkable philanthropist with an unusually modern vision for education. She established the first school in Islington and, as demand outstripped space, it moved to its current setting in the Hertfordshire countryside. Because of its roots and its close and important relationship with the Worshipful Company of Brewers, there are 20 places each year for 11-year old students from Islington. It also offers 65 places to the highest scoring applicants who sit the entrance exam each year and a further 10 places for the most talented or able musicians who apply for a place in Year 7. The remainder of the places in an annual cohort of around 200 go to local students on the basis of proximity to the school and to those with priority need.
It is the combination of academic, talented, sibling and locality intake and its truly outstanding record of achievement and added value that makes our school such a special place, which is oversubscribed by 5 applicants per place every year. Our dedicated staff, parents’ association, governing body and school (staff and student) leaders constantly appraise and re-appraise the various aspects of school life, learning and achievement so we are never complacent. Indeed, the school faces the usual challenges of all educational establishments in the public sector and ensuring that their impact is felt least by the students is a key objective.
As you will learn through the information provided in the pack, we have much to be pleased about: in 2013 we received the Teaching School award; we lead an Alliance which is a Who’s Who of top schools; in 2014 and 2015 we earned the place of top state school in England which is not fully selective in the Sunday Times league tables, and in 2017 we have been chosen as the Sunday Times’s School of the Year; many of our school leavers from Year 13 have offers from top universities to choose from, including at least 20 places at Oxbridge; we have outstanding Music, Art and Drama departments and have produced renowned musicians, including Tyler Rix and Gary Kemp. According to HMI, we have “the most extensive programme of extra-curricular activities [I have] ever seen”. Although we are proud of our achievements, we recognise there is still much to be done to ensure our continued success and to ensure learning is not compromised in challenging times.
Owen’s has recently been described as “a gem of a school” in the Good School Guide and “the golden ticket” in Tatler, and benefits from some of the most able students in the country. Our Foundress left a number of fields in the then village of Islington to the care of the Worshipful Company of Brewers which now generate over £900k of additional income for the school annually. This creates a very special ethos and fosters the very positive staff working environment. The students and staff benefit from a number of traditions, including Beer Money, staff awards and Visitation.
Here are some of the key qualities and attributes we consider have contributed to our excellent reputation:
· Committed and dedicated staff who are responsive to change
· Teamworking
· Energetic and enthusiastic students
· A very wide range of extra-curricular activities
· Outstanding league table performance
· Excellent resources and facilities
· Forward-looking and proactive leadership
· A foundation stone of tradition and heritage
· Exceptional recognition by Ofsted
What Ofsted said about us:
· This is an outstanding school.
· The school sets demanding targets and provides outstanding academic support and guidance to students of all abilities.
· Standards in the Sixth Form are outstanding and have been for some time.
· High standards of attainment and student progress are a consistent feature in MFL, Science, Mathematics, Religious Education, History, ICT and Music.
· The school believes that the quality of teaching and learning is outstanding and HMI agree.
· The students’ attitude to learning is excellent.
· The students’ personal development is outstanding; they become mature, articulate individuals.
· Behaviour throughout the school is excellent; students are polite and confident.
· Leadership and management are outstanding.
The school has developed a very close partnership with a very supportive parent body to ensure the effective education of their children. We are hugely oversubscribed with over 1,000 applications each year for the 200 places available in Year 7, and 10 applicants for every external place available in the Sixth Form.
As the majority of the information about our performance can be found on the web I won’t provide too much unnecessary detail in this pack. For me, the key to the school’s continued improvement is the constant striving to enhance the learning experience of the students in our classrooms. This we pursue through reference to, and involvement in, research; borrowing the best ideas from the most effective schools in the country; and an extensive programme of professional development.
Our main aim and how we achieve itOur primary aim is to work in partnership with students and parents to ensure that students achieve their full potential
ü Striving for academic excellence;
ü Providing a happy, safe and caring environment and encouraging a sense of pride in the individual and our School;
ü Embracing innovation whilst maintaining our strong links with tradition;
ü Providing interesting and challenging opportunities so that students enjoy their learning and maintain a desire to continue learning throughout their lives;
ü Recruiting and developing outstanding staff;

All staff members are encouraged to continue their personal development and undertake further qualifications.

Information about the Physical Education Department, and the post
The Department you will join, and the role
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a well-resourced and energetic PE Department. The current PE team consists of nine people with varying expertise and experience. The person appointed will be an outstanding practitioner, who has the enthusiasm, knowledge and drive to contribute further to this highly successful Department.
The present internal organisation has the Director of Sport representing the Department, above a Head of Girls’ PE and a Head of Boys’ PE. Other staff are given further responsibilities, for teams or specific sports, within that framework.
The PE Department is regularly boosted by additions from ITT (initial teacher training) institutions such as the Universities of Middlesex, Bedford and Brighton. The Department has the benefit of a PE Technician and the facilities at the school are superb, with excellent field space, an indoor gym, a sports hall and a dance studio as well as a fully equipped PE classroom for GCSE and A level Physical Education.
Boys and girls are taught separately in core lessons at key stage 3 and 4, with examination classes being mixed. A range of activities are taught throughout the school year including hockey, netball, gymnastics, dance, athletics, rounders and tennis. The department has a strong teaching and learning ethos and the successful candidate should be receptive to new ideas and continually look to develop their own practice.
