How to Guide for Creating Your Wiki at Wikispaces.com
Welcome to the world of wikis, where creating web pages with all of your research and work is fast and easy. You can edit your wiki from wherever you have an internet connection. This is a basic guide, and you can make your wiki as simple as you want with just words, or you can make it truly interactive with pictures, hyperlinks to great sites that will help anyone looking for more information, and even videos and podcasts!
Your First Page
There are a few things that have to happen before you can get to your wikispace:
1. Your teacher must have an email address on file for you so they can invite you to join the space (only invited users can edit the page).
2. You must have clicked on the in the email that you received in order to register for the site.
3. Once at Wikispaces, you must submit the information they ask for.
After that, you should land here:
Here is what your first page will look like once your teacher has invited you to join the wikispace he or she has created.
Over the next page or so we will walk through the basic stages of adding content to your page.
This page is the “home base” for the wiki. Your teacher’s introduction will be here.
In the upper right-hand corner of the page, you will see your name and a few other items.
· By clicking on your username, you will be taken to a page that shows all of the wikis you are a part of, and when you last worked on them
· The envelope will take you to a mail site where other people working on this wiki can send you messages about the project.
· Settings will take you to your time and date settings
· Help is for questions you have while working. Use this a lot!
· Sign out logs you off of the site.
· “wikispaces” takes you back to the Wikispace homepage.
Across the top of the pages you go to, you will see this toolbar
To the left side of the page is your navigation bar.
· Any page on your teacher’s site is open for editing, unless your teacher has locked it.
· By clicking on your group’s page, you will be taken to the page to begin editing and inserting your content.
· Remember, do not edit pages that you are not a part of. Once you are logged in, Wikispaces keeps track of everything you edit.
The Editor
When you have chosen the page you want to edit by clicking on it in the navigation bar, you will be taken to the page. Whatever has been added to the page will be right in front of you.
To begin adding content to the site:
1. Click on “Edit this Page.”
2. You will now be taken to the Editor.
3. Most of the tools here are exactly like those you may have seen before in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel. Let’s go through some of them.
· B is for Bold
· I is for Italic
· U is for underline
· The dropdown that says “Normal” changes the size of the font.
