Healthy Acadia, in partnership with the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center, is excited to offer “Cooking Matters,” a free, six-session healthy cooking class series, in Calais and Eastport this fall. The series is specially designed for those struggling with a tight food budget while living with cancer. Classes are also great for those living with diabetes and chronic disease. If space allows, members of the public not experiencing chronic disease are most welcome to participate. Classes will offer participants an opportunity to learn easy ways to prepare healthy, delicious meals and stretch food dollars. Classes are free, however, pre-registration is required.

“Cooking Matters teaches healthy eating habits, cooking skills, food shopping, and budgeting through a fun and hands-on learning experience,” said Sara McConnell, Healthy Acadia’s Washington County Nutrition Education Coordinator. “Cooking Matters offers incredible resources and we are thrilled to offer the series in partnership with the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center, Calais Methodist Home and Labor of Love Nutrition Center.”

In each class, under the guidance of Healthy Acadia’s Sara McConnell, Georgie Kendall and Marianne Moore, participants will work together to create a meal and enjoy sampling their completed dishes. Free take-home ingredients will be provided for participants to recreate the meal at home. A recipe book and other helpful kitchen tools will also be provided to participants upon completion of the class series to help support cooking at home and more healthful living with cancer.

"Nutrition is an important part of a healthy lifestyle for anyone but especially those with cancer. This collaboration is an exceptional opportunity," said Michael Reisman, Executive Director of the Beth Wright Center.

The Eastport class will meet on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30pm at Labor of Love Nutrition Center, 137 County Road, Eastport, ME 04631 on the following dates: September 12, 19, October 3, 17, 24, and November 7, 2017. The Calais class will be held at the Calais Methodist Home, Inc., 116 Palmer Street Calais, ME 04619 on Thursdays 5:30-7:30pm from beginning September 14 and continuing October 19, 2017. Participants are requested to commit to all six classes in the series. To register for either class, please contact Sara McConnell at 255-3741 or Marianne Moore at 454-0501 or .
