PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE

This general specification defines the minimum requirements for surface preparation, application and installation of intumescent fireproofing materials manufactured by Carboline under the trade name of THERMO-LAG 3000

1.2 REFERENCES

1.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. THERMO-LAG 3000 based on the following UL 1709 specification:

Fire Rating: 2.5 Hour

THERMO-LAG 3000 UL Design: XR 618

THERMO-LAG 3000 Thickness: 0.410 inches

Substrate: Columns, Beams and Vessel Skirts

B. Surface Burning Characteristics as Tested to ASTM E84 (Class A)

1. Flame Spread: Less than 0-25

2. Smoke Developed: Less than 0-50

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of applicable section.

B. Shop Drawings: Show locations and THERMO-LAG 3000 design.

C. Product Data: Published THERMO-LAG 3000 description, performance characteristics and limitations.

D. Test Certification: Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL 1709) certification

E. Carboline’s Instructions: Application manual (latest revision) with special requirements, procedures and conditions.

F. Carboline Certification:

1. Approved applicator certification.

2. Product data sheets and Material Safety Data Sheets.

1.5 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Applicator: 3 year’s experience in this work, trained and certified by Carboline.

B.  Carboline: 10 year’s experience in manufacturing quality performance, fire resistive coatings.

1.6 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

A. Comply with applicable codes for fire resistive coatings to provide the required fire resistance to structural steel columns, beams, vessel skirts, etc.

B. Inspection: Testing and laboratory services required for work of this Section, as specified by the Project.

C.  Fire Testing and Certification by Independent Laboratories:

Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL 1709).

D. Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Content:

THERMO-LAG 3000 P: 0.11 lbs/gal (13 g/l)

THERMO-LAG 3000 SP: 0.53 lbs/gal (64 g/l)

1.7 SAMPLE INSTALLATION

Prior to actual start up, a sample installation shall be prepared following all specified procedures. This sample installation will then be agreed upon by representatives of the Owner and Specialty Application Services (SAS), and any others having a vested interest in the installation. All subsequent contract work shall conform to the surface quality and overall installation details of the sample installation.

1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Comply with Carboline’s written instructions.

B. Deliver material in sealed, undamaged containers with appropriate labels.

C. Store material in strict accordance to Carboline’s written instructions.

1.9 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Air and Substrate Temperature: Comply with Carboline’s application manual (latest revision).

B.  Relative Humidity: Comply with Carboline’s application manual (latest revision).

1.10 COORDINATION

Coordinate application of fire resistive coating prior to installation of ducts, equipment and other construction materials.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURER

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that conditions are ready to receive work. Do not begin work until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected. Beginning work constitutes acceptance of existing conditions.

B. Verify galvanized steel has been sweep blast cleaned per SSPC SP7 and primed with approved primer (reference Section 2.2).

C. Verify that areas to be fireproofed are accessible to receive work.

3.2 PREPARATION

Provide protective cover to prevent overspray on surfaces not designed for fireproofing.

3.3 APPLICATION

A. THERMO-LAG 3000 must be applied in strict accordance with Carboline’s written instruction. Where there is conflict with provisions of the contract documents, more stringent requirements apply.

B. Apply THERMO-LAG 3000 to the specified thickness outlined in Section 1.4.

C. Control thicknesses, utilizing a combination of wet film thickness checks and a Positester 6000/Elcometer 345, or equivalent electronic dry film thickness gauge based on Technical Manual 12-B (2nd edition) Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industries– International (AWCI).

3.4 QUALITY CONTROL

A. Special Inspections: Comply with all provisions of the Project specification for testing and inspection.

B. Recommend utilizing the Quality Control/Quality Assurance reports in Appendix D of the THERMO-LAG 3000 Fire Barrier System Application Manual Onshore Petrochemical Market – Revision: 0, dated November 2007.

C. The final inspection of the THERMO-LAG 3000 Fire Barrier System (surface preparation, primer, THERMO-LAG 3000, fiberglass mesh and topcoat system) is to ensure that the application meets the Project specification.

3.5 PATCHING AND REPAIR

Remove, patch and repair non-conforming and damaged areas per Carboline’s instructions.

3.6 CLEAN UP

Clean all surfaces that may have been oversprayed with the products.
