Swim Cap (BRAIN) Directions

WARNING: only one swim cap per student...don't mess up!! This will be graded for anatomical correctness. You'll also have an opportunity to earn some extra credit by wearing your swim cap to each of your classes and having your teachers sign a verification form that you wore it for at least 15 minutes of each class.

Sometimes it is helpful to put it on your lab partner's head and then you can draw the outlines of the needed parts on the left and right sides. You can take it off to draw in the details.

1. USE A PERMANENT MARKER. *IF YOU WANT LOTS OF COLORS, YOU'LL NEED TO PROVIDE YOUR OWN MARKERS, AS ALL I HAVE IS BLACK.

a. outline these on one side of the swim cap. See samples Mrs. C has. ***IMPORTANT you will be labeling and writing a brief function of each part...so make the diagrammed areas as large as possible while still remaining relatively anatomically correct.

b. Label the following lobes: frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital.

c. Label the fissures and sulci: lateral sulcus, central sulcus, longitudinal fissure, parieto-occipital sulcus

d. Label the functional areas of the cortex located in particular regions of the lobes (refer to pg 435 in your textbook)

e. *refer to the homunculi on pg 436 in your textbook and label the primary sensory cortical regions and the primary motor regions for knee, hip etc...TRY TO SPACE EACH APART TO REPRESENT THE AMOUNT OF CORTEX AREA ASSOCIATED W/ EACH .

NOW: in as few words as possible, write the function of these parts (if given). Example: Stereotyped motor movements

2. ON THE other SIDE of the swim cap outline the midsagittal view of the brain ****VERY IMPORTANT...BE SURE IT ALIGNS WITH THE PARTS ON THE OTHER SIDE IN TERMS OF THE FRONTAL LOBE, AND CEREBELLUM LOCATION *otherwise one side will be anatomically correct when you put it on your head and the other will be backward! (refer to pg 443 in your textbook

a. outline the cerebral cortex adding a few sulci and gyri (see pg 443)

b. outline the cerebellum, spinal cord, medulla, pons, midbrain, pituitary gland, optic chiasma, (see pg 443)

c. Draw in & label the details show on pages 443
