Assessment Task: Positional Words

Common Core Standard: K. G. 1

Materials: -a block or some other object

-an open container, large enough to hold the object with a clearly defined front

Procedure:For this assessment the teacher should sit beside the student.

Put the container on the table with defined front facing the student.Ex. Build a bear box, toy house, etc.

Hand the object to the student and ask the student to perform the following tasks:

  • beside the container
  • above the container
  • next to the container
  • behind the container
  • in front of the container
  • below the container

* IF STUDENT SUCCESSFULLY MODELS ALL 6 POSITIONAL WORDS THEN…

  • Tell the student “Look around the room and find me an example of something that is beside and tell me about it” (example: the clock is beside the window)
  • If successful ask student to find an example of “above” and tell about it.
  • If successful ask student to find an example of “next to” and tell about it.
  • If successful ask student to find an example of “behind” and tell about it.
  • If successful ask student to find an example of “in front of” and tell about it.
  • If successful ask student to find an example of “below” and tell about it.

If at any point the students is unable to find an example and tell about it, stop assessing for a level 4 and give the student a level 3. They must provide an example and description for each of the 6 positional words to be a level 4.

Performance Levels:

Level I:The student models 0, 1, or 2 of the positional words

Level II:The student models 3, 4, or 5 of the positional words

Level III:The student models all 6 positional words listed

Level IV:The student models all 6 positional words listed and explains all 6 positional words in the environment
