THE DISCIPLE JUDAS ISCARIOT

Luke 6:16 (KJV)
16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

INTRODUCTION:

How does a person become a traitor?”

Judas was chosen along with the other eleven disciples after the Lord spent all night in prayer. Luke 6:12&13.

Judas saw Christ perform miracles and heard the sermons, yet he betrayed the Lord. Why?

Judas was the treasurer among the twelve disciples;

  • he kept the bag. John 12:6.
  • To be. nominated and elevated to this position assumes some trust by the disciples in Judas.

I)LOVE OF MONEY WAS JUDAS’ STUMBLING BLOCK. John 12:1-8. TURN AND READ

Jesus and the disciples were at the house of Lazarus whom he had just raised from the dead.

We don’t know who of the disciples were present, but we do know that Judas was present.

Mary was anointing the feet of Jesus and wiping them with her hair. This is a great piCTure of complete humility or surrender to Jesus.

Judas looks on and interrupts with “Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor”? John 12:5.

One pence was one day’s wages. So three hundred pence would have been three hundred day’s wages, or a year’s salary.

Therefore we see that this was not just a ten cent bottle of perfume. It was very expensive.

a)John recognizes Judas’ motives

  • John 12:6 (KJV)
6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

i)John knew that Judas was a thief.

Paul further testifies to the love of money

1 Timothy 6:10 (KJV)
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Others who fell because of the love of money.

(1)Achan. Josh. 7:20&21.

(2)Gehazi. II Kings 5:20—27.

(3)Ananias & Sapphira. Acts 5:1-10.

(i)The wrong desire for money is translated as “lust of the eyes”. I John 2:15&16.

(ii)Money is neutral. It is not wrong. The wrong desire or motive for money causes it to be sin. The sin was not the money, but the love for money.

  1. WHAT OTHER THINGS CAN ALSO BE NEUTRAL BUT A DESIRE OR MOTIVE MAKE IT SIN
  2. LUST=

a longing (especially for what is forbidden)

Have a craving, appetite, or great desire for

WILLING TO RISK ALL TO SATISFY THE NEED FOR WRONG

II)JUDAS WAS A TOOL OF SATAN.

a)Jesus knew from the beginning that Judas would betray Him.

John 6:64 (KJV)
64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

John 6:70-71 (KJV)
70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

b)Judas Was still a free moral agent. He could have refused to follow Satan.

John 13:27 (KJV)
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

i)Judas left the presence of Jesus. Vs. 30.

ii)This does not teach that Judas was lost after being saved. He was never saved to begin with.

John 13:11 (KJV)
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

III)JESUS’ FINAL APPEAL TO JUDAS.

a)Notice the change after Satan enters Judas.

i)The eleven asked Jesus, “Lord is it I?” Matt 26:22.

Matthew 26:22 (KJV)
22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?

b)Judas doesn’t say Lord, but rather, “Master, is it I”?

Matthew 26:25 (KJV)
25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

c)Jesus replies, “Thou hast said.”

(MATT 26:20-25) the Lord's Supper was used as an appeal to a sinner.

Christ used the occasion of the Supper to appeal to Judas.

He gave Judas a last chance to repent of his sin.

Christ took three steps with Judas.

1.Christ revealed the sin and the treachery of Judas.

The apostles were, of course, stirred: "exceeding sorrowful" (Matthew 26:22).

2.Christ warned the sinner of terrible judgment (Matthew 26:24).

3.Christidentified the sinner (Matthew 26:25).

He answered Judas, letting him know that his sin was not hid.

"I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:3, 5).

Thought 2. Judas sat at Jesus' Last Supper, and he deceptively partook of it with sin in his life.

Thought 3. Judas deceived the apostles. People can deceive others, even family and friends, and never be discovered, but God knows the heart and the sin.

Thought 4. The disciples examined themselves. They looked at themselves to see if they were the sinner. Believers are exhorted to examine themselves before partaking of the Supper (1 Cor. 11:27-28).

IV)JUDAS’ REPENTANCE WAS TOO LATE

Matthew 27:3 (KJV)
3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

i)He confessed that he had sinned and betrayed innocent blood.

(1)He did not repent toward God.

(2)Confession can often be because a person gets caught in his sin.

ii)Judas goes out after the confession and kills himself. Acts 1:15-20

V)His symbol is a hangman’s noose or a money purse with pieces of silver falling from it.

CONCLUSION:

THERE ARE THOSE WHO PLAY THE ROLE OF A CHRISTIAN

IF YOU ARE SAVED THEN ACT LIKE IT

IF ARE LOST REPENT AND don’t ALLOW SATAN TO RUIN WHAT COULD BE IN THE LORD
