3.  National Championships Venue

Venue :: Beban park is one of the largest parks in Nanaimo and located pretty much in the center of town. It was the site of our first cross race in 2004 and our first BC Cup race in 2005. Beban park has many facilities including a pool and skating rink. The park has several areas that are good for warming up: off course. We will have access to a change room and shower for girls and guys in the bottom of the field house located 100 meters from the start line. Registration will be inside the BIG BARN so it will be under cover. You will also be able to leave your gear in the barn and it will stay dry. There is lots of parking for our race and it will not be an issue. You will be able to park within 150 meters of registration. Beban park is under 15mins to the B.C. Ferries Departure Bay terminal and under 20 minutes to Nanaimo Airport and the Duke Point Ferry terminal.

Club and Sponsor Tents

We will have an area for sponsors to have their tents set up on the opening straight away. We will also have an area for clubs and/or individuals to set up tents for warming up or working on bikes in the second part of the opening straight away.

4. National Championships Course

Course Description :: we feel we have come up with a challenging course that will test all of your cyclocross skills. Course measurements indicate that it is around 2.8k in distance but final distance will depend on how exactly it is marked for the race. The course has the following features: the BMX track, 2 run ups and one set of barriers. We look forward to racing on it again and having you guys race on it.

We will try to have the course pre-marked the day before the race and on race day we will have the course REALLY well marked. The race starts on pavement. We will have a proper starting grid and call riders up based on criteria set by us and agreed to by the CCA and then a fill in from there. We will post call up outlines here as soon as we have them approved.

Course description from the start:

The first straight away until the course narrows is 190m. From there you enter the “Big Field” and into a slight right hand turn. This heads into a left hand sweeper and then another right turn. From there you travel to the far corner of the field and down a slight hill. After negotiating a left turn around an off camber section you head slightly up hill ad back across the field. A right turn puts you at the first entrance to the double sided pits. You travel slightly down and around a large pile of dirt and up to a gravel walkway that heads down to the BMX track section. Hopefully by this point the starting selection and field have started to thin out a bit. Down the gravel path you head into a wooded section. This will be tight! A few quick turns in the woods and you are faced with a short sand section and a right turn in the parking lot of the BMX track. A short stint in the grass and you are heading across the parking lot towards the start ramp of the track. Remember a 60+ year old lady made it around this track no problem during our 2004 event BUT it did claim two middle aged men racers so BE careful and PRACTICE this section. We will complete the first “U” of the track (complete with jumps (you can choose to get air or not!) and a short bit of the 3rd straight (whoop de doos) before heading out of the BMX track. Around the back side of the track (we have taken out the small log hop over from 2004) and then you have a recovery flat gravel path section. Across the parking lot and into a short grass section with a few turns before you head up the first run up. From the run up you have a tall grass flat section before a tricky downhill and around (counter clockwise) the concession stand and back up the driveway. The next section is pretty well similar to last year. You will cut across an off camber grass section and negotiate a tricky downhill behind the bleachers. From there you hook up to a flat grass section and then into our new stair run up. At the top of this hill is the 2nd side to the pits. From here you proceed up to the entrance to the VIX area and wind past some of the barns. THEN: You go into the BIG barn and here is where the pumping music and your barriers section will be. Out of the barn again and you do a left turn and another left turn beside the barn. Up to the pavement and a right. Left right before the starting grid and into a sand riding ring. Straight across the ring and left. Over some grass and left onto pavement. Your finish and lap point are located about 100m from the turn onto the pavement.

The 2005 Course Measured as follows:

Each full lap is 2865M

The 1k mark is the high berm on the BMX track

The 2k mark is the far end of the bleachers.

Surfaces:

Pavement: 160M

` Grass (this is hard grass “ubdergrowth” not a nice field: 1183M

Gravel: 1124M

BMX Track: 315M

Barn: 80M

There is also one short section of sand which is less than 20M

A thanks to Dan Brady from the HoJo for measuring this all up for us last year.

Estimated Lap count based on 2005 Results will be:

Elite: Ricky Federau from Gears Racing did 8 Laps in 1:01:58

Masters: Menno Jogsma from Frontrunners did 6 Laps in 51:55 so from that we estimate that the masters 30-49 racers and Juniors will be racing 5 laps.

Espoirs we estimate will be racing 6 laps.

Women’s Masters and Masters 50+ Men we estimate will be racing 4 laps.

Women: Stacy Spencer from Trek Red Truck Racing did 6 Laps in 54:55 so from that estimation we think that the women’s elite race will be 5 laps under UCI time requirements.

Actual lap numbers will be determined on the race day by officials based on required time for the championship races and the speed of the opening lap. A remaining laps board will be posted at the end of your second lap.
