Aims / For the student to critically analyse European and professional cultural issues, the international dimension of nursing and health care, and to gain an indepth awareness of their own culture and some cultural respect for the culture of others
Learning outcomes/objectives / By the end of the module the students will be able to:
· Critically analyse through reflection her/his awareness of the influence of culture on health, welfare and professional nursing;
· value the sharing of multi-cultural knowledge and experience;
· demonstrate and understand an indepth awareness of other cultures;
· Review and apply transcultural theory/tools to their experience and critically analyse the relevance of this to their own experience
· reflect using relevant reflective tools on their own values and attitudes relating to nursing and health care;
· share her/his learning experiences with colleagues through a range of mediums;
· gain an understanding for the experience of being a stranger through analysis of the experience
Content /
Preparatory Phase.
Notions of cultures. Review of relevant transcultural nursing theory ie: Purnell and Paulanka, Leinger, Campina Bacote through guided reading.Familiarisation with the provision of health and welfare in their exchange country and an understanding of the position of professional nursing.
Preparation for travel and being `a stranger`
A knowledge of the ‘official version’ of national culture, including regional variation.
Review and analysis of reflective practice
Preparatory material will be provided by host institutions
Exchange Phase
A minimum of one week exchange including 1 day orientation to host institution and health care setting. 4 – 8 days of observational experience based in an identified health care settings. Reflection through e-learning.
On return, students will be encouraged to continue to reflect on their experiences, sharing experiences with those who have visited other countries and institutions. Students will be asked to write a small piece identifying their learning from the situation (to be posted on student central)Teaching and learning strategies / Internationally prepared material, semi- lectures, reflection through the use of student central based diaries and groups, seminars, discussion and presentations.
Learning support / Module learning support is provided by home country institute and the overseas placement is supervised by partner college.
English speaking mentors and teaching staff from the host country.
Specified reading and preparatory material will be given depending on country visited.
Structured discussion and reflection on student central to be used whilst on placement to ensure in direct contact with student whilst abroad -provided by home institution.

Assessment tasks / The module assessment will take the form of an individual 20 minute presentation that is tutor assessed using power point followed by 15 minutes discussion.
One area of interest will be identified from the exchange experience as the focus of the presentation.
The presentation should include:
1. a comparative element between home and host country
2. cultural concepts critically analysed using transcultural nursing theory.
3. professional concepts
4. reflection on learning that has taken place and identification of how this will affect their future practice.
10% of marks will be awarded for the style and competence of the presentation.
90% of marks will be awarded for content, this will be broken down into
20% for the comparative element
25% for cultural awareness
20% for professional issues
25% for reflective learning
The assessment will use the L3 marking criteria.
Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / This module aims to promote a greater awareness and critical understanding of the influence of culture on health care and nursing. The module uses the concept of `being a stranger` to illustrate key points and facilitates student acceptance and valuing of cultural differences. This module includes a placement abroad.
