Budget:

Further budget cuts are not necessary at this time. Still working to reconcile budget request with budget received. This will impact ‘one of” purchases such as laptops for the instruction room. Will continue to work on and update this group.

Barbara Boehnke

  1. The library fund structure has been revised. Liaisons will receive bi-monthly updates on the book budget balance, which will provide a reason for contacting your faculty liaison.
  2. Book withdrawls from the ConnectNY project got off to a good start, but due to staff attrition we did not accomplish as much as we planned.
  3. I appreciate the work done by the librarians in weeding the existing print collection and in creating a virtual reference collection. I am now trying to implement a coherent plan, based on your weeding decisions, for reducing the size of the print reference collection and bringing it back to the first floor, if possible before the next phase of renovations begins.

The Space Committee shut down the renovation of the Reference area this year, so we could not make the changes that were envisioned.

Strategic Plan is complete and will be to Kris be then end of the week.

My FYE program was shut down due to no enrollment.

We hired plenty of students this year. If you have any projects and would like student assistance please let me know.

Kelly Lambert

The Instruction Team meets more frequently over the summer due to the busyness of teaching during the semesters. This summer we were trained on using the new classroom technologies, identified different furniture configurations for the space, and addressed some space issues including lighting, closet storage, and classroom supplies. We reviewed assessment results from course evaluations, faculty assessment of instruction, and the iSkills test. This information was used to plan our instruction goals for the coming year that include more focus on topic selection, citation, and using e-reference databases. We also finalized our Instruction Strategic Plan and agreed on use of an information literacy assessment rubric that will also be used by the CCC.

Various assets were created for the library in Compliance Assist, the system that will store and map our assessment data. The Instruction Strategic Plan has been loaded to the system and the Instruction Team have been organizing major assessments they have done and adding the files to an Assessment folder on the I Drive that is serving as a holding zone for these reports.

Kelly & Jeff have been working on migrating LibGuides, and we are currently live with Version 2. All existing guides have been moved to an unpublished status and are only published once edited using the new side navigation and updated box and link system. More info on general guidelines for layout will be forthcoming.

At the campus level, I worked with the CCC to identify learning goals and objectives for information literacy, devise a rubric, and presented on iSkills results. For the FYS instructors group. I co-presented a workshop on writing around the mandatory annotated bibliography assignment to include early writing assignments leading up to the annotated bib, use of NoodleTools to teach citation, and life after the annotated bib including a list of research assignments using the sources identified in the annotated bib in addition to or in lieu of a research paper.

Early in the summer I weeded and suggested purchases for GVRL.

Lisa Sullivan

I completed weeding the fiction in the curriculum center. Besides removing certain titles I pulled titles that needed to be replaced or repaired. I updated the catalog records for the titles that we kept or repaired. I updated the catalog records for the Newbery, Caldecott and Coretta Scott King award winners. I found out that this was a timely project because Deb Beis is running an FYS class on fairy tales. Many of the fairy tale books that we own are award winners but their catalog records were incomplete. Now it will be easier for the students to find the titles they need. The FYE class that I am co-running with Connie Pileri has started. The students are interested and we have guest speakers scheduled, including Joe Bieron (professor emeritus) who will speak on the history of Buffalo and Fr. Pribek and Kathleen DeLaney who will speak on the Irish in Buffalo. The FYE workshops are on the schedule and appear in GRIFFLink. They will be advertised in a weekly flyer to the freshmen. The FYS faculty have also been emailed about the workshops. Jessie & I will email the instructors again closer to the start date. I finalized the journal renewal list. Titles were cancelled and two titles were switched from print to electronic format. The information for these titles has been added to their order records, which will be important for Summon.

Ongoing until after event

This project had numerous challenges due to vacancies in Fine Arts and Marketing Communication which impacted my work by increasing much more of my time and resources than originally anticipated.

Exhibit is open to the public during regular library hours. Archives Speaker Series will be an evening event due to speaker’s commitments. The exhibit celebrates and features his generous gift of rare Yeats books and other materials to the Archives and Special Collections and the Library.

This event may be used as a “credit” for FYE Griff101participants since it is tied to the ARTS/Canisius program.(Brochure from Fine Arts forthcoming week of September 15th).

Processing

Current and backlog –ongoing as able. Backlog has grown over the summer as a result of College structuring, and lack of student or professional staff.

Ongoing

Collections MSS. 30.0 Church Musicians Guild- 5 boxes; good condition; minimally processed using MPLP (more product less processing technique)

MSS 7.0 Housing Opportunity Made Equal (HOME) – 17 boxes; varying states; v. poor condition on two boxes; can work off of original finding aid, but manually processed.

Numerous changes to College structure impacted ability to process these and other collections. Restructure of Student Services, Admissions, Alumni and Deans Offices, among others greatly increased identification review and intake of collections, and stalled flow of review of Collections so designated from Library Renovation Process before return to stacks.

Ongoing

Finding Aid Pilot Project

NYEAD Program: w/ John Bewley @ UB for NY State Archives. This project will assist with preparation and cataloging of our finding aids for inclusion into a regional database. Two small collections will be the test batches (QUADRANGLE and MSS 30.0 Church Musicians.

N.B. This project was completely stalled due constraints set in motion by College restructuring. I am still I involved, and will proceed this fall.

Ongoing

American Institute of Physics (AIP) – Annual grant funds to convert legacy finding aids to EAD. If funds can be used for personnel, this may be an opportunity to convert Ruddick Collection Finding Aid to EAD, AIP funded processing of original Collection.

Apply next Summer. We rate very Eligible.

IMLS-Art Conservation Grant to Clean and Restore Painting by S. M. Roosevelt

Challenge- needed signatories from Fine Arts and Commitment from the Grand Island art conservator, plus detailed plan from Fine Arts faculty. The faculty member left Canisius, and this grant application could not be completed.

If program is available in 2015 (with reduced funding),we’ll apply.

Content DM (CDM) – WNYLRC through the 3Rs and NY State Archives announced the migration of New York Hertitage newspapers into New York Historic Newspapers (NYHN) database. As a result, Canisius will migrate our CDM collections into WNYLRCs collection. Migration is completed on our newspapers to NYHN and will be live this fall (date to be announced by WNYLRC…persistent links will be catalogue ready). Other digital photographic and archival collections will gradually migrate; and will necessitate close metadata management. This project, also impacted my planned work, but it is anticipated that eliminating our Content DM license will be a significant cost savings. Much time was spent negotiating with WNYLRC before the merger, as well as discussing alternate options with AJCU colleagues.

Jessie Blum (did not attend meeting, but submitted notes)

Summer projects:

  • I worked on VR assessment. I developed a rubric for scoring questionpoint chats for the months of April and May 2014. I also looked at all the chats from January 2014 – June 2014 and assigned each question to a topic. I wanted to see what kinds of questions our patrons were asking via VR to see if there was a way of created an FAQ or better answering these questions on our website in the future.
  • I established the embedded librarian program. Kelly, Matt, Jeff and I met several times to determine what this program might look like. In doing so, I also created a menu of instructional services that will be implemented soon.
  • I planned and ran the annual Orientation program.
  • Kelly and I planned our section for the FYE program now known as Griff 101.
