Students will have online access through my portal their login information is the same as what they use to log onto the computers at school.

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide educational experiences through exploration of Life Science. The course includes, but is not limited to textbook work, technology, lab experiments, projects, Science Fair Project and tests.

Topics: Nature of Science, Characteristics and Classifications of Life, Cells and DNA, Genetics, Plants, Viruses, Protists and Fungi, Animal Classification, Human Body Systems, Changes Over Time, Ecology and Human Growth and Development.

Learning Goal: Improve student understanding of the above mentioned areas through the discipline of science and the scientific method.

Lab Donation: $5.00

Materials supplied by student: paper, pencils

Requirements: Students will:

  • Bring all necessary materials to class each day.
  • Participate in all class work and complete homework activities on time.
  • Demonstrate proper lab safety at all times.
  • Maintain a portfolio containing notes, handouts, lab experiments and test information.
  • Participate in Science Fair and STEM projects

Personalized Learning- Our classrooms will be participating in PL activities to possibly include:

  • Classroom codes of conduct
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Standard Based assignments and assessments
  • Goal setting

Technology:

  • Technology will be permitted for instructional purposes only with teacher permission.
  • Bring your own device contracts will need to be signed by student and parent before they will be allowed in the classroom. (We anticipate that we will begin using BYOD in September.)
  • We will be using Schoology for communication, assignments and resources.
  • This platform can be accessed through the students’ myportal (can be found on the front page of the Carver website). Their username and password will be the same as it is to log on to the school computers

Discipline: We will utilize the school based Behavior Tracking System (BTS) forms that has four main stages of discipline.

  • Step 1- Verbal warning
  • Step 2- Written warning and documentation of behavior and possible phone call home
  • Step 3-Dentention with parent phone call
  • Step 4-referral with parent phone call

Evaluation: Progress reports will be sent home after 4 1/2 weeks and a report card at the end of the 9 weeks. Parents are encouraged to check skyward regularly for weekly updates on their students’ progress. If there are any questions please feel free to contact the teacher at any time by calling the school, email or through Remind. The grades will be weighted as follows:

Tests 30%Assignments 70%

Grading Scale:A=90-100, B= 80-89, C= 70-79, D=60-69, F=59 and below.

Homework Policy: Students will be required to finish and turn in homework when assigned by the teacher. Please check student agendas for this information. All assignments should be completed by the next day unless otherwise specified.

Make-up Work:

For all work turned in after 5 days the highest grade a student can receive is a 50.

Required Projects: Science Fair is required for advanced students. There will be due dates throughout the 1st semester and at least 1 grade in each grading category. (All relevant information on these projects can be found on the Carver website under the Science Department tab.)
