JOB DESCRIPTION

SCHOOL CARETAKER

OUTLINE OF DUTIES

FREQUENCY

e.g. Daily

1. To attend to the opening and closing of the premises at Daily

designated times and to be responsible for general security

at all times. In this connection school caretakers may be

called out at unsocial hours or at weekends to deal with

security problems.

2. To meet and attend to all contractors visiting or working on Daily

the site.

3. To receive and check all goods and supplies and to distribute Daily

them as necessary.

4. To oversee, as instructed, the efficient working of heating plant

and lighting, monitor fuel consumption and re-order where Daily

necessary, keeping required records.

5. To read meters as necessary and maintain approved records, As reqd

including any concerned with energy from floor lever.

6. To undertake specified indoor cleaning duties, including the Daily

inside surfaces of windows up to 11 ft from floor level.

7. To clean and be responsible for the tidiness of paths, drives As reqd

and other hard surfaces within the site grounds.

8. To note and report as necessary on matters affecting the health Daily

and safety of persons on the site.

9. To undertake repairs and maintenance on furnishings and As reqd

buildings against a County-approved list.

10. If participating in an approved “Handyperson” scheme, to Daily

undertake maintenance and repair tasks against the County –

approved list.

11. To keep paths, access points and entrances free of snow and As reqd

ice to ensure safe passage.

12. Where a swimming pool is present, to carry out maintenance As reqd

duties as instructed. This will include: maintaining water purification

plant and use of chemicals.

13. To carry out errands, such as escorting moneys to the bank As reqd

as directed by the Head of Establishment.

15. Periodically, to clean lamp shades and light diffusers, Thrice

taking account of instructions given on cleaning at heights. annually

16. The reporting of defects in buildings, furniture, fittings As reqd

and plant, as required by regulations or the instructions of the

Head of Establishment.

17. The replenishing of soap, towels and toilet paper to Daily

all lavatories on the site as necessary.

18. In respect of cleaning:

a) to monitor, as requested by the Head of Establishment Daily in term time

the performance of the contract cleaners, to report

accordingly to the Head and to make appropriate entries

in the Site Record Book.

b) make known to the Headteacher an deficiencies in As reqd the service

c) provide access to the premises for contract cleaners within As reqd

approved times

d) in the event of the suspension of contract cleaning, to As reqd

supervise any direct labour cleaners engaged by the Authority.

e) emergency cleaning in critical areas (e.g. toilets) as directed As reqd

by the Head of Establishment, where the contractor has failed

and a health risk is deemed to exist.

19. To maintain adequate stocks of caretaking and cleaning As reqd

supplies ( for areas which are the responsibility of the school

caretaker) and to re-order from the approved supplier as necessary

in accordance with procedures.

20. With regard to lettings, to carry out security duties and As reqd

associated cleaning up to at least two occasions per term time

week and one weekend in four.

Summary of Job:
Ensure the security of the establishment, provide a cleaning and general maintenance service of internal and externally buildings and surrounding areas. Specific duties will vary according to the establishment.
Outline of Main Duties:
1.  If required by the establishment, maintain the security of the premises by opening and closing premises (including times for lettings), checking and replacing CCTV tapes (where applicable), repairing doors, latches and fences, acting as key holder for out of hours contact to maintain a safe environment.
2.  Undertake the general checking and cleaning of some parts of the establishment, as directed, and if required cover for any absence of the cleaner i.e. dusting, vacuuming, cleaning toilets, emptying bins, etc., to ensure a tidy environment is maintained.
3.  Ensure outside areas are kept free from litter, sweeping leaves, emptying bins, etc., and if required grass cutting and grass maintenance to maintain a clean and tidy environment.
4.  Undertake daily and seasonal maintenance of the site and equipment, inside and out, as required for the type of establishment including changing light bulbs and tap washers, clock batteries, door locks, woodwork, decorating, clearing drains and toilets, cleaning and repairing wheelchairs to ensure a safe environment is maintained.
5.  Maintain adequate supplies of cleaning materials and supplies (oil, light bulbs, batteries, salt, etc), re-ordering when needed, to meet the establishments needs.
6.  Attend training courses as required and assist in the training of other premises support staff as directed.
7.  Comply with Health & Safety, Fire Regulations and other County policies
According to the requirements of the particular establishment some or all of the following duties may be required:
8.  Carry out maintenance duties on swimming pool (where relevant) including maintaining water purification plant and use of chemicals to meet health and safety requirements.
9.  Drive minibus for client journeys, outings and or staff journeys in accordance with the Highway Code to meet the establishment’s needs.
10. Provide a first point of contact for all deliveries, moving items to an appropriate area to keep passageways clear and hazard free.
11. Move heavy and awkward shaped furniture and supplies as requested, and work at heights as required in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and after the completion of a Management Risk Assessment.
12. Escort and advise maintenance contractors attending the building who may be pricing or carrying out a job to ensure the contractor is given adequate information to complete the task.
