You are millionaires! Congratulations to the Class of 2008! You have already received over $1.3 million in scholarship money. Bring copies of all your acceptance and scholarship letters to me as soon as possible so that I can keep everyone up to date. Way to go!
§ The 2008-2009 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is available at www.FAFSA.ed.gov. The FAFSA determines whether or not you are eligible for Pell and SEOG Grants, Work Study Programs, or federal student loans. ALL STUDENTS should submit a FAFSA, even if you do not expect to qualify for financial aid. Many colleges and universities require that you complete the FAFSA to be considered for their scholarships and other aid. If you want to print a pre-application worksheet, go to www.studentaid.ed.gov. To speed up the process, you can sign your application electronically, but you and a parent must have a PIN. Apply for your PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. This is a free service.
§ Several financial aid and college planning magazines are now available for pick-up at my office. Additional financial aid information is available at http://www.ache.state.al.us/Students&Parents/PayingforCollege.htm, including grants, federal program, military dependent awards, and other scholarships.
§ Unsure about your AP scores and what’s accepted at your school of choice? You can find accepted AP scores at various colleges online at http://apps.collegeboard.com/apcreditpolicy/index.jsp.
§ Are you interested in becoming a paramedic? The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department will pay for you to complete a 2-year Associate Program, and they’ll pay you $21,850 while you work for them and go to school. You will sign a commitment to work for them for a time following your training. They will accept 10 candidates in this program. See me for information.
Scholarships
§ Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program offers 105- $1500 awards to Alabama residents. Screening is based on superior test scores, GPA in honors or AP classes, leadership ability, school and community involvement, and high goals and aspirations. No financial need requirement! Bring a resume for the scholarships committee by February 15.
§ Marian Gaynor Yanamura Educational Fund will award 8- $3000 renewable scholarships to Daphne and Fairhope High seniors. Applicants are evaluated on character, academic promise, and financial need. Applications in the rack, due March 24. A recommendation from Mr. Blanchard is required.
§ The Hawkins Education Foundation for Baldwin County will award 6- $6000 renewable scholarships to Baldwin County seniors. Qualifications are 2.0 GPA, leadership ability, community involvement. Due February 15. Applications in the rack or online at www.hawkinsscholarship.com.
§ Baldwin County Homebuilder’s Association Associate Scholarship will be awarded to at least one Baldwin County student planning to enter a college, business, or technical school in a field related to home building. In the rack, due April 30.
§ Coastal Chorale College Scholarship Program offers a $1000 scholarship to talented seniors interested in pursuing a degree in vocal music. Applications in the rack, due March 1.
§ The Gavin “Gee” Hunter Scholarship is now available for students pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field. This is a $2900 renewable award. Applications in the rack, due to me by March 25.
§ Alabama Teacher Recruitment Incentive Program (ATRIP) will issue scholarship loans to students who plan teach Math, Special Education, General Science, and English Language Arts. You are obligated to teach in Alabama for each year an award is received. You will be required to repay the loan only if certain conditions are not met. Applications in the rack. No deadline, but you must complete FAFSA by March 31.
§ Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary society for women educators, offers $500 for girls who plan to major in education. Applications in the rack, due March 1.
§ Rockwell Elementary School gives one- $1000 scholarship to a Rockwell Alumni. Applications in the rack, due April 1.
§ Baldwin County Association of Professional Educators will award a $750 scholarship to a senior who will major in Education. Application in the rack, due April 8.
§ Eastern Shore Federated Women’s Club will award a $500 scholarship to a student enrolled in Career Technical Education. All co-op students are qualified. Application in the rack, due March 21.
§ Fairhope Garden Club will award $1000 to a student seeking a 4 year degree in horticulture or a related career. 2.5 GPA, a personal letter about your interest, and application (in the rack). Due February 8. They will also award $500 to a student attending a community college in horticulture or related field. In the rack, due April 2.
§ Scholarships for Military Children Program is available to unmarried children of active duty, reserve/guard and retired or deceased military personnel. Applications in the rack, due February 20.
§ The Baldwin County Auburn Club will award 1- $1000 scholarship to a DHS senior who is in good academic standing, demonstrates financial need and excellence in citizenship. Due March 31.
§ Best Buy Scholarship Program is now available online at www.BestBuy.com/scholarships. They will give 1500 $1500 scholarships, and 51 $10,000 awards. Based on community service and academic achievement. Deadline is February 15.
§ Kohl’s Kids Who Care Program recognizes young people who have donated their time, effort, and ideas to make their communities a better place. Almost $200,000 in scholarships will be awarded to over 1600 young volunteers. Learn more at http://www.kohlscorporation.com/CommunityRelations/Community05.htm. Deadline is March 15.
§ The Poarch Creek Indians offers a $30,000 scholarship for each Tribal member ages 10-25. Applications and details at www.poarchcreekindians.org. Other Native American students may be eligible for other awards at http://www.aiac.state.al.us/AIAC%20Programs.htm.
§ The Dixie Youth Baseball Scholarship is available online at http://www.dixie.org/Page29.aspx, or you may pick up a copy in the rack. The deadline is March 1.
§ The Women’s Alabama Golf Association is offering a $2500 renewable scholarship for female golfers with at least 22 ACT. Due April 1. In the rack, or online at www.womensalabamagolf.com/scholarships.asp.
§ USA Today is sponsoring the 10th annual “Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year” (SAMMY) 2008 Award Program. It recognizes outstanding scholar athletes and will award 25- $7500 scholarships, a weekend at Disney World, and inclusion in a national ad campaign. Judging is based on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service, and milk experience. Applications are due March 7 and can be found online only at http://sammy.bodybymilk.com/
§ The G.I. Dependents Scholarship is available online at www.va.state.al.us/scholarship.htm, or pick up a copy in the rack.
§ The Kids’ Chance Scholarship provides scholarships for college and tech school to children who have had a parent killed or permanently and totally disabled in an on-the-job accident. The deadline is May 1. Download the app at https://alfinc.org/kidsChanceApp.cfm, or pick up a copy in the rack.
§ Prospective student athletes must register with NCAA if you plan to play Div I or II. You must also meet admission standards for the college you plan to attend. Available online at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.

§ The University of South Alabama still has scholarships available, even if you did not apply by the scholarship deadline of December 1. Applications in the rack.
§ University of Mobile Preview Day is February 15. Receive a $2000 scholarship just for attending.
