The Purpose of the Role:
To Manage the day to day operations of the David Ross Sports Village,climbing wall, providing a safe environment for climbers and ensuring compliance with all relevant University and departmental policies and procedures; plan develop and deliver a high quality diverse climbing wall programme, offering a range of opportunities to all; devise and planthe route setting programme to ensure innovative and challenging activity; Lead and motivate the localised team of climbing wall assistants; Planning and co-ordinating staff training; Researching and reacting to customer needs and preferences; Maximising participation, climbing wall occupancy and income levels.
Support the delivery of the Vision for Sport to deliver an outstanding student sporting offer and establish the University as the first choice for students wishing to combine a top quality education with an outstanding sporting experience.
Main Responsibilities / % time per year1. / Instruction
- To provide high quality instruction to individuals and groups within the climbing wall, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all customers.
- To Liaise with the relevant University Of Nottingham Student Sport clubs to help grow recruitment and retention, providing agreed instruction and coaching to current and prospective members
2. / Staff management
- To motivate and leading the localised team of staff i.e. theclimbing wall assistants, promoting and embedding a culture of excellence, overseeing work programmes and ensuring efficient and effective service delivery.
- To assist with the monitoring of staffing levels, planning and preparing shift rotas as required.
- To plan, co-ordinate theand deliver the climbing wall staff training programme, including but not limited to, staff inductions; equipment set up and handling;quality systems, policy and procedure training; ensure staff are trained the appropriate standard
- To maintaineffective records of appropriate staff training within the David Ross Sports Village Climbing wall, implementing robust systems to ensure staff skills are acquired, refreshed and developed in accordance with the departmental training policy, ensuring statutory compliance with industry regulations is achieved at all times
- To ensure the effective communicationof all relevant procedures and policies, for example NOP’s and EAP’s, ensuring staff are able to demonstrate a high degree of awareness and competence at all times.
- To ensure levels of sickness and absence, are recorded, addressing issues arising in accordance with University Policy, liaising with the David Ross Sports Village Manager where required.
- To carry our performance appraisal of staff where required
3. / Service Delivery and Development
- To maximise climbing wall occupancy and income; plan, develop and deliver a high quality diverse climbing wall programme, liaising with internal colleagues and external organisations where appropriate.
- Create and develop training sessions and courses for customers, including but not limited to, induction and basic safety, climber improvement and development.
- Maintain a high degree of visibility within the climbing wall, proactively managing and developing service delivery and the implementation of quality systems, responding to and resolving customer queries, complaints and enquiries.
- Liaise with UoN Sports Clubs with respect to timetables training and events within facilities, supporting clubs with member attraction and retention where required and maintaining regular contact.
- Develop and Manage an effective the route setting programme to ensure a range of interesting and dynamic routes of varying levels of difficulty are available at all times, liaising with UoN sports club members and external technical support organisations where required.
- Promote the University Sports Membership schemes in liaison with appropriate staff and assist with the creation of campaigns and offers.
- Plan and manage the sale and hire of equipment relating to the climbing wall, ensuring opportunities are maximised wherever possible and ensuring robust and transparent stock control procedures in accordance with departmental policy.
- Assist with the effective and timely communication with customers with respect to changes to the David Ross Sports Village programme, ensuring that website and other mediums of communication are up to date and accurate.
- To complete relevant service audits, reporting and acting on findings to ensure all required standards are achieved.
- Advise and input regarding upgrades, refurbishment and improvement to the climbing wall
4. / Operations and Health and Safety
- To develop and maintain effective Normal operating procedures and emergency action plans for use within the climbing wall; ensure effective practice and procedures are in place with respect to customer competence and rescue situations
- Co-ordinatethe planned and preventative maintenance programme relating to the David Ross Sports Villageclimbing wall, conducting regular checks, of structures and equipment maintaining effective records.
- To ensure all licences and services relating to climbing wall structures and equipment are up to date and available at all times.
- Carry out all appropriate risk assessments, and risk reduction planning, maintain PPE and COSHH registers, encouraging comment and feedback from staff and making recommendations for update and amendment.
- To promote and embed a culture of ‘safety first’ within the climbing wall via high quality instruction and vigilant supervision of activity, and appropriate safety aids and signage.
- To ensure the creation and implementation of robust customer induction and familiarisation systems and procedures are in place at all times, minimising risk of injury and promoting positive customer experience.
- Ensure the reporting of incidents and near misses is carried out in accordance with University and departmental Policy, liaising with the David Ross Sports Village Manager where appropriate.
- To maintain efficient and effective systems for the resolution of re-active maintenance; development and monitoring of documented maintenance systems and procedures.
- Co-ordination of the fixed asset and equipment replacement programmerelating to the David Ross Sports Village climbing wall
- Assist with the co-ordination of regular building, fire drills and emergency evacuation tests, maintaining effective records.
5. / Financial management, reporting and service monitoring
Financial:
- To set and attain annual income and expenditure targets.
- To undertake appropriate administrative duties when required, for example, raising of orders, stock checking and receipting of goods received
- To Monitor throughput, uptake of activities and external bookings and events, providing reports where required, ensuring that systems relating to customer entry and recording of data are adhered to at all times
6. / Departmental support
•To assist with the delivery of marketing campaigns, ensuring awareness and implementation from sports centre staff and helping to develop the UoN sport brand.
•To be present for departmental and University wide events, for example, freshers fair, open days and the alumni sports weekend, offering support and guidance and assisting delivery where required.
•To deliver events, projects and programmes as required in liaison with appropriate colleagues.
•To support the David Ross Sports Village Manager on the delivery of large scale events and bookings at the sports centre, ensuring client needs are assessed and met.
- To support colleagues in ensuring compliance with all industry regulations and standards, reporting recommendations to the David Ross Sports Village Manager
- To act as Duty Manager for the David Ross Sports Village when required, for example, in cases of unplanned absence, large events or annual leave.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Mountain Leader Award
or Equivalent Relevant Qualification
Evidence of educational competence, literacy and numeracy i.e. GCSE Maths and English C Grade.
High degree of Knowledge of relevant regulatory and Health & Safety Legislation. / First Aid at Work or equivalent
Diploma or ISRM Sport and Recreation Management Certificate or equivalent
Sports related degree
Recognised management qualification (eg. ILM
Nebosh General Certificate or equivalent
Mountaineers Instructor Award

Experience / Experience of management at a commercial climbing wall or a similar type of sports facility, including the design & control of routine maintenance and periodic refurbishment projects
Previous experience of effectively managing the performance of climbing instructors
Resource and budgetary management
Experience of motivating teams to achieve and exceed planned targets and objectives related to facility management, customer service and income generation
Experience of supervising and training large teams. / A committed climber / mountaineer
Understanding of current issues relating to Sport & Recreation in HE
Experience of overseeing outdoor facilities
Experience of design and implementation of accredited quality management systems.
experience of managing pool plant rooms and equipment
Statutory/Legal / Current DBS registration or preparedness to undergo DBS check.
