Congratulations to the advancing schools! Denison Theatre Department welcomes you to the next level of competition and we hope that this contest will be enjoyable, productive, and successful for all who participate.
Fee for the contest: $625per school to cover expenses to pay for the judge, awards, and crew. Please bring this check with you on the day of contest, and make it payable to Denison High School Theatre Department. Do not send this ahead of time. Thank you.

Time of contest:
- The director’s meeting with the critic judge will be held at 11:10 am in the greenroom.
- The contest will begin at Noon, and plays will be run back to back.
Performance order: (will perform “back to back”)
The plays “1”, “2”, “3” are determined alphabetically by play titles of the advancing plays. See contest book for details. Districts 9/10 are 1A and Districts 11/12 are 1B.

Rehearsals :3 schools will rehearse April 8th at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm and 3 will rehearse April 9th at 8am, 9am, and 10am.
Rehearsals will be set by the distance traveled by each advancing school. For example: The closest school to Denison will rehearse first. The farthest will rehearse last. Other conflicts can be considered to set this rehearsal schedule. The director’s meeting will be at 11:10am, and performances will begin at Noon. The contest manager will email an official rehearsal schedule as soon as all schools have advanced. We will perform “back to back”.
The Adjudicators
The panel of judges were assigned by the State Office.

Please overnight your scripts to all three judges ASAP. Please do not require that the judge “signs” to receive the package. Please mark on outside of envelope “April 9 contest at Denison High School”.

On the Day of the Contest
Arrival:
Please arrive at least 20 minutes ahead of your assigned rehearsal time. Pull your bus and/or truck into the loading dock area and wait. Do not knock on loading door. We will raise the loading dock door when we are finished with the school ahead of you. Amy will find you so that paperwork can be looked at prior to the rehearsal.
We will have four of our theatre students’ help during the rehearsal and performance. Once you have unloaded your props and costumes to backstage, Matt will spend a few minutes introducing our crew and himself to you and your students. Once he is finished explaining the rehearsal process you will be ready to begin.
Bring with you on contest day to show Amy at rehearsal:
- Your check payable to Denison High School Theatre Department for $625
- Written Proof of royalty payment for the performance of the day of contest
- Proof of Publisher permission or author permission to Perform the play (required at rehearsal)
- UIL permission to produce plays not on the approved lists, if applicable.
- UIL approval for set additions to basic set (required at rehearsal)
- Integrity script marked with sound cues for Contest Manager to use during contest.
- Music log (required at rehearsal)
- Signed “Community Standards and Compliance Form” (new form for 2016)
- Please tell Amy and/or Matt if you plan on using the official sound check recording from the State office

Dressing Rooms:
Denison has two formal dressing rooms. They vary in size. We will have room for your group to hang out in one room all day by yourself. We will give you a schedule of dressing room use for your group to stay during the day when you arrive. Please be patient with us regarding this issue.
Holding Rooms:
You will need to provide your own mirrors. Ice chest and food are allowed in the rooms.
Lighting and Sound:
There will be twoDenison Theatre students available to help your students with the light and sound board. This student will be in the booth during rehearsal as well as during performance. Please see tech specs regarding our equipment. Each school will be assigned a set of numbers for cues to record during rehearsal. Personal flash drives are not allowed. You can run our light board manually (we recommend this).
Spike Tape:
We will provide tape for each school.
Audience:
There will be a $5.00 admission charge for all guests to cover contest costs.
This does not include company members or school officials. Comp tickets will be allotted for your company.
Technical Information Regarding
Denison High School’s Smith Auditorium
Performing facility:Smith Auditorium (Proscenium stage)Denison has a complete UIL Set:
Seats 650 audience membersWedo not have any French Doors, Windows, or Doors.
The stage is:50’ wide
19’high
30’ to upstage blacks from proscenium arch.
13’ deep apron
There is a fly loft and fly system
There is a black midstage traveler that can be closed to make the space smaller.
WE SET WITH THE CURTAIN CLOSED.
Lighting Areas:1 through 20 (see Light map at the end of this document)
We use 20 areas with Down Right being 1. Channels 21 and 22 are specials on the side stages.
The light board is a Strand Lighting NEO .
All cues will need to be written and recorded during the one hour rehearsal period. Also, schools are not allowed to change the sub-masters. School #1 will use cue numbers starting at 101. School #2 starting at 201. School #3 starting at 301. ETC.
Schools are not allowed to save their cues on their own flash drive or CD.
(This negates the potential of viruses being brought in on various flash drives.) Thanks for your understanding.
WE RECOMMEND RUNNING MANUALLY and NOT RECORDING CUES.
Sound- We have an 80 channel mixer. (Soundcraft SI Performer 3)
The sound board is located in the FOH booth.
One CD Player for use in the booth capable of Auxiliary or Bluetooth.
There are two locations that music can be sent to, the Main House Speakers and 2 Speakers above stage.
“Tracks” is the CD Player. “Overhead” is the Above Stage Speakers and your Grand Masters control the House.
- The light board and the sound board are located in booth which is located back of house on the second floor.
- Headsets are wired located stage right and stage left, and several are in the booth. More Available upon request.
- UIL set will be stacked Stage Left. Furniture/props will come on stage from stage leftfor set up.
