Psalm 86:11

11 Teach me Your way, O Lord;

I will walk in Your truth;

Unite my heart to fear Your name.

[1]

1 Samuel records for us that David had five great resources during the early part of his life, resources that we might find God has been giving us too.
A good position

1 Samuel 18:5

5 So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely. And Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.[2]

Good place to be in the king setting you over the men of war and better yet the men accepting you.

A man after God's own heart can do some good here!

II. A good wife

1 Samuel 19:11-14

11 Saul also sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and to kill him in the morning. And Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.”12 So Michal let David down through a window. And he went and fled and escaped.13 And Michal took an image and laid it in the bed, put a cover of goats’ hair for his head, and covered it with clothes.14 So when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.”[3]
This is a good wife when she will stand by her man even when he is a "dummy"

Michal is Saul's Daughter...... So when her Dad comes to kill you pray you have a good wife.

III. A good influence from God

1 Samuel 19:18-19

18 So David fled and escaped, and went to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth.19 Now it was told Saul, saying, “Take note, David is at Naioth in Ramah!”[4]

A man of God (Samuel) takes David under his wing at risk to him self.

III. A good friend

1 Samuel 18:1-4

Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.2 Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore.3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.4 And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.

[5]

Now the queers will try to get people to read something perverted into the scripture about David and Jonathan here Don't you dare think that way about a man after God's own heart.
IV. A good dose of self-respect

1 Samuel 17:31-37

31 Now when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them to Saul; and he sent for him.32 Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock,35 I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it.36 “Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.”37 Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

One by one, these resources fell away.
I. His position

1 Samuel 18:12-13

12 Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul.13 Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.[7]

II. His wife 1 Samuel 19:17

17 Then Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me like this, and sent my enemy away, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! Why should I kill you?’ ”

[8]

1 Samuel 25:44

44 But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.

[9]
IV. His man of God 1 Samuel 20:1

Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and went and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity, and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”[10]

V. His friend 1 Samuel 20:42

42 Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘May the Lord be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever.’ ” So he arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.

[11]

V. His self-respect 1 Samuel 21:10-15

10 Then David arose and fled that day from before Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.11 And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing of him to one another in dances, saying:

1 ‘Saul has slain his thousands,

And David his ten thousands’?”

12 Now David took these words to heart, and was very much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.13 So he changed his behavior before them, feigned madness in their hands, scratched on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva fall down on his beard.14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is insane. Why have you brought him to me?15 “Have I need of madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”

[12]
We must trust God even when life doesn’t make sense.
I. Learn More of God’s Word
A. We’re built to be learners
B. It’s tough to walk the life of faith alone
II. Lean More On God
A. It’s painful to be stripped of your other supports
B. Do not “make an idol” of anything you can lose

Psalm 86:11

11 Teach me Your way, O Lord;

I will walk in Your truth;

Unite my heart to fear Your name.
