Motor Vehicle - Procedure to be followed in the event of a collision or injury

  • Stop vehicle immediately. Turn off engine. Extinguish any fire. Do not smoke near any vehicle or near any escaping fuel. Protect the scene of the accident by placing out reflectors, flags or other warning devices if available. Direct traffic around the scene if necessary. See that help such as police, ambulance and doctor are summoned. Dial 000, ask for service required, advise nature and exact location of emergency. Advise number of persons injured.
  • Notify the Police in the event of any personal injury or if it is otherwise required by law.
  • If another vehicle is involved, obtain and record the following details:

Name and address of driver

Name and address of owner

Description of vehicle (make, colour)

Registered number of vehicle

Name of insurance company with which the vehicle is insured

Extent of injuries, damage to vehicle or other property

Precise words of other driver or passengers if 'guilt is admitted', of defective condition of vehicle, extent of injuries or damage

Names and addresses of all witnesses (including Police officers (names, badge numbers, reporting station))

Note time and exact location of collision or injury

  • Admit any responsibility or liability to the other party;
  • Make or sign any statements)
  • Give any information except :

As required by Police or other authorities

Name and address of driver, (show driver's licence , if requested)

Name of RMIT motor vehicle insurer (CGU Insurance Ltd).

Remain courteous and avoid controversy at the scene of the accident.
