Background
The South Terrace Clinic, FremantleHospital, Infectious Diseases Departmentwith the support of the Sexual Health and Blood-Borne Virus Program (SHBBVP) provides training updates in sexually transmitted infection and blood-borne virus clinical management for rural and remote nurses in Western Australia (WA). This training is provided to up to four (4) registered nurses working in rural and remote settings in WA each year at a time suitable to both South Terrace Clinic staff and the rural nurse. The training is a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 days depending on the experience of the nurse. The length of the training and content is to be negotiated between the South Terrace Clinic Nurse Coordinator and applicant prior to applying for the bursary.

Eligibility for application
The Sexual Health and Blood-borne Virus Program (SHBBVP) has limited funds available to assist people employed within government and non-government organisations to undertake STI and BBV clinical management updates at South Terrace Clinic at Fremantle Hospital. To be eligible applicants must:
- Be working within Western Australia
- Be a registered nurse employed in a permanent or long term contract position in a government or non government health service
- Be responsible for STI and BBV clinical management as a significant part of their work role
Terms and conditions
The applicant must abide by the following terms and conditions of the bursary application process:
- The bursary is for the amount of up to A$2000 only
- Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Assessment will be based on the applicants’ ability to demonstrate the need for this specific training, and application of the skills and knowledge in their work
- The applicant must provide evidence of employer approval to attend the training specified on the application form submitted to SHBBVP
- The applicant must undertake and provide evidence of successful completion of the STI on-line training prior to undertaking the course.[1]
- Funds will only be used for travel, and accommodation for the duration of the training.
- Once the bursary is approved by SHBBVP, bookings for the nominated travel and accommodation are the responsibility of the applicant or the employer organisation
- The applicant will provide one invoice to the Department of Health for travel and accommodation, and evidence of attending and completing the training provided by South Terrace Clinic, and pre-course on-line training. Payment of the bursary will not be granted unless all supporting paperwork is provided to the Department of Health. Prepayment for travel and accommodation will not be granted
- The bursary can only be applied for prior to booking travel and accommodation
- Only applicants from rural and remote areas will be eligible for travel and accommodation costs
- Under no circumstance will bursary payment be made to individuals. Payment will only be made to employer organisations. SHBBVP takes no responsibility for payment if individuals pay for the travel and accommodation.

TERMS OF AGREEMENT

Objectives of Nursing Placement at South Terrace Clinic
- Increase knowledge and understanding of disease aetiology and transmission of sexually transmitted and related infections including Blood Borne Viruses (BBV’s).
- Increase knowledge in order to provide accurate and comprehensive information related to Sexually Transmitted Infections/ BBV’s and contact tracing protocols when returns back to remote service area
- Increase ability to identify normal and abnormal findings and when appropriate to recognise own limitations and consult with medical practitioner as required.
- Increase clinical skills in taking an accurate sexual health history that includes risk assessment and counselling about safer sex practices
- Increase confidence and skills in correct STI testing techniques
- Knowledge of cervical screening techniques and skill development of obtaining a satisfactory Pap Smear (This does not lead to accreditation)
- Increase understanding of HPV aetiology relative to both warts and cervical cancer
- Increased awareness of services in metro area directly related to sexual health services
