Lighting the Second Advent Candle– Peace

Pastor:In a world where so many experience conflict and violence,
People:God lights a candle of peace in our hearts as we wait for a Savior,
Pastor:Who will be Immanuel,God with us,
People:Christ the Lord.

Pastor:Hear the word of the Lord from Luke 1:78-79:

People:By the tender mercy of our God,
Pastor:the dawn from on high will break uponus,
People:to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
Pastor:to guide our feet into the way ofpeace.

(The 2nd Advent candle is lit)

CONFESSION AND ABSLOUTION

Pastor:In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People:Amen.

Pastor:In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth

People:and He created humans in His own image.

Pastor:God created us to join in His life of love

People:and there was harmony in all God’s creation.

Pastor:God said “YES!” to us and all creation.

People:And we said “YES!” to God and lived a life of love.

Pastor:But we humans rebelled against God.

People:We said “NO!” to living under God as King.

Pastor:So sin entered the world and with it death.

People:And our sinful nature still rears its ugly head

Pastor:every time we say “NO!” to God

People:by refusing to love God above all things

Pastor:and by refusing to love our neighbor as ourselves. Therefore, we confess:

All:Lord God, Heavenly Father, like Adam and Eve we have sinned against You by saying “NO!” to your gracious reign over our lives, by refusing to love You with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, and by not fully loving our neighbor. Forgive us for the sake of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Speak Your “YES!” to us so that we might live. Then restore us, by the Holy Spirit, to say “YES!” to a life of selfless love once again. Amen.

Pastor:God has answered our prayer even before we uttered it! For while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us! (Romans 5:8). God spoke His “YES!” to us by sending His Son to earn our righteousness, to pay for our rebellion on the cross, and to rise from death to make us God’s friends again. And in our baptism God says “YES!” to us by connecting us with Jesus’ death and resurrection. (Romans 6:3-4). All of God’s promises to us are “YES!” in Christ Jesus. (2 Cor. 1:20) Therefore, asa called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. You are forgiven through faith in Jesus! Now live for Him by saying “YES!” to a life of love.

People:Amen! We say “YES!” to a life of love!

Verse 1

Hark the glad sound!

The Savior comes;

The Savior promised long;

Let ev'ry heart prepare a throne

And ev'ry voice a song.

Verse 2

He comes the pris'ners to release,

In Satan's bondage held.

The gates of brass before Him burst,

The iron fetters yield.

Verse 3

He comes the broken heart to bind.

The bleeding soul to cure,

And with the treasures of His grace

To enrich the humble poor.

Verse 4

Our glad hosannas,

Prince of Peace,

Thy welcome shall proclaim,

And heav'ns eternal arches ring

With Thy beloved name.

SERMON "Yes! All Peoples Will Be Blessed!" Rev. Dr. Bruce Peffer

SERMON TEXT all readings

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of

the world to come. Amen
