SAN DIEGO CITY COLLEGE DANCE AND VISUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT PRESENTS

“An Evening of Dance” @ THE SAVILLE THEATRE May 12 and 13

San Diego, CA – May 3, 2017– The San Diego City College Dance Department presents its spring dance production “An Evening of Dance” on Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m. in the Saville Theatre.

Spring is that wonderful time of the year when the City College Dance department is gearing up for its annual performance: “An Evening of Dance”. Directed by Alicia Rincon, this special performance celebrates the shared talents of the City College Dance faculty and students, featuring exhilarating movement and lively music of all kinds. Each dance contains its own theme supported by music, costumes, photography, film, and light, and featuring the artistry of lighting designer Rob Norberg. The audience will enjoy a rich combination of contemporary dance forms including modern, hip hop, and Latin-jazz influences. City College faculty choreographers include: Alicia Rincon, Dr. graceshinhaejun; Terri Shipman; Debi Toth-Ward and Terry Wilson.

Director Alicia Rincon has created a lively, up-beat, and thoughtful dance entitled: “Al’s Jukebox Joint”, accompanied by a contagious mix of music featuring Rickie Lee Jones, Nortec Collective, Arcade Fire, Tech N9ne, and Buffalo Springfield. Rincon has included in her dance the talent of City College photography professor David King. King’s photography frames this piecethat is set in the era of the 60’s innocence and also a time of conflict and confusion in the Vietnam war years, reminding us that history can repeatitself . This dance looks at the present issues of the deportation of illegal immigrants, the justice system and asks about the moral intention of societies. Rincon has invited the collaboration of her “wonderfully diverse, smart, open-minded, and talented” students into the process.

Always a favorite in the show,Dr. grace shihaejunhopes her two dances, “Collisons” and “Rise”, will inspire audiences through the mindful and thought-provoking themes. While “Collisons” addresses the loss of life, “Rise” celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. jun describes her process of creating work at City College as “…always rewarding and challenging. Sometimes the work is in creating a cohesive piece with dancers from varying technical abilities, but it is always amazing to witness the moments as they begin to shift from students participating in a class to performers on the stage”.

Entitled “Brownian Motion”, Debi Toth-Ward explores the erratic random movement of microscopic particles in a fluid, a result of continuous bombardment from molecules of the surrounding medium. This mysterious concept features the music of Biosphere and Hang Massive, impacting the stage with rhythm and repetition with an organic flare! Toth-Ward expressed her enthusiasm inworking with her students, “The City dancers are very eager to try all my explorations and theydemonstrate an enthusiasm andcommitment to whateverI throw at them”.

In celebration of this time of year, Terri Shipman offers, “Break” which reflects the sad, cold and contracted winter that transforms into the lightness of spring, unveiling re-birth. Her dancers will swirl in the space to the music of Philip Glass, Zoe Keating and the classical favorite, Antonio Vivaldi. Shipman’s process with the students combined a very mixed level of dancers and experience that grew into a focused and productive group. “As always, my students are inspiring and supportive”, said Shipman.

Terry Wilson found inspiration from photographs of thespiraling schools of fish in Cabo Pulmo, Mexico which led to the creation of “Build”. In this large cast of dancers, Wilson endeavors to explore the many applications of the word “Build” through a combination of improvisation and choreography. Wilson reflects, “Working with both concepts of spontaneous movement and set choreography created an atmosphere that celebrates the individuality of each performer and the cohesiveness of ensemble thinking”. Wilson’s works brings together movement, music and film to a collage of music created by OlafurArnalds, Gustavo Santaolalla, and Rene Aubry.

“An Evening of Dance” promises to be an exciting performance of movement, visual imagery, emotions and the rich exploration of the human condition. Please join us in celebrating the talented dancers at City College and the unending devotion, dedication and artistic vision of the dance faculty.
