Candy Candle Mat

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:

21 – 2 ½” squares

1 - 6 inch square of thinsulate

1 - 8 inch square of fabric for back

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Pick out 9 pieces of the 2 ½” squares for the center of your mat and arrange in a pleasing manner; 3 across by 3 down. (Hint: 5 busy in the corners and center, 4 less busy on the other 4 blocks).
  2. Pick out 12 pieces of the 2 ½” for “points”.
  3. Sew the 9-patch together. Press.
  4. Prairie Points: Fold a 2 ½” square in half diagonally. Press. Fold it in half again diagonally. Press. Repeat for all 12 squares.
  5. Lay the prairie points on the 9 patch mat with the points pointing toward the center (raw edges of points on the raw edges of the 9 patch). Make sure all the folds are laying in the same direction. Center the points on each square and the 4 corners should lay beside each other. Pin. Use a ¼” seam allowance and sew all the prairie points to the mat.
  6. Layer the backing wrong side up, then the thinsulate, and then the mat wrong side down. Pin 3 places (there should be a small(1/4 inch) space around the thinsulate.)
  7. Use the prairie points as a guide for quilting. Place the edge of your walking foot along the prairie points and quilt. Do not sew the prairie points down.
  8. Trim the seam allowance on the 4 corners to reduce bulk.
  9. Trim the backing of the mat to ½” larger than the quilted mat. Press half an inch under around the edges
  10. Press the prairie points out so that the raw edges of the seams fit just right around the thinsulate. Hand (or machine) stitch the edges.
