STAGE 1 REQUIREMENTS FOR SUMMER COURSES

1 Age Requirements:

Some courses are restricted as to the age of applicants. Some courses

such as glider pilot have a minimum age requirement.

2. Medical Requirements:

All cadets applying for any courses, exchange or employment must complete an application form known as a CF-51. It contains general health questions and personal information. Cadets applying for glider pilot course will have to undergo a complete physical examination.

3. Forms:

Cadets applying for national courses will have to fill out the appropriate

application supplied by the Air Cadet League. For local selection courses

a CF-51 must be fully completed.

4. Summer Training Courses:

Successful completion of level three training will make you eligible to apply

for certain summer training courses;

a. Survival Instructors Course;

b. Glider Pilot Course;

c. Air Cadet Instructors Course;

d. Athletic Leadership Course;

e. Musician Level 4 and 5;

f. Service Band;

g. Air Studies; and

h. Technical Training Courses.

(i) Aero engines/Airframes;

(ii) Photography; and

(iii) Electronics.

CONFIRMATION STAGE 1

1. What form do cadets applying for summer training complete.

Answer: Cadets apply by completing a CF-51 or the appropriate Air Cadet League application.

2. Does age restrict some level three cadets from applying for some courses?

Answer: Yes, some courses such as glider pilot have specific age requirements that may restrict some cadets from applying.

STAGE 2 SUMMER TRAINING SELECTION PROCESS

1. Local Selection:

a. Some positions at Summer Training Centres are given to a

squadron based on established quota of cadets and available

positions on a course. Squadron Commanding Officers will work

with the Training Officer to compile a list of all cadets who are

eligible for specific courses. A list of qualified candidates is made

from those who have applied.

b. The Squadron Commanding Officer and the Chairman of the

sponsoring committee may conduct interviews with candidates

before making their selections. Cadets who have not been selected

but are qualified may be put on a back-up or spares list. This list is

used by the Area Cadet Officer to fill a camp position should the

original candidate be unable to attend or if additional positions on a

course become available.

2. Provincial Selection:

a. Some courses are referred to as national courses. Positions on

these courses are given to the provincial committees based on an

established quota for that region. The provincial committee of the

Air Cadet League selects cadets that will be awarded these

courses. Selection process for these courses can vary from region

to region but all are quite similar.

b. Candidates must first fill out the appropriate application form that is

supplied by the league. Squadron Commanding Officers will ensure

that all requirements are meet by each candidate.

c. The next step is for the cadets to attend a review board. The review

board is a selection committee composed of military and league

officials who will interview the candidates. Cadets are assessed on

their school marks, written narrative, previous training reports,

Commanding Officers recommendation, extra curricular activities,

knowledge of current affairs, dress and deportment etc. Because of

the varied questions that will be asked by members of the review

board, cadets must do considerable preparation beforehand.

d. The candidates for the course are ranked on a provincial basis.

Cadets who are not selected initially are still on a back-up list as

spares. If a selected cadet becomes unable to attend their course,

a spare will be put in his/her place.

CONFIRMATION STAGE 2

1. What groups make up a review board?

Answer: The Military and the Air Cadet League.

2. What are some things a review board assesses cadets on?

Answer: School marks, written narratives, Commanding Officers recommendation, course reports etc.

3. What is the difference between a local selection course and a provincial selection course?

Answer: Local selection course cadets are decided upon at the squadron level. Usually the Commanding Officer and a sponsoring committees representative makes the decision. Provincial committee selection requires applicants to go before a review board made up of league and military personnel.

28 MINs / PERFORMANCE CHECK
