LONG BEACH, Calif.
26thCharity Regatta for Children's Clinic Sunday
This Sunday (Sept. 23) features an annual sailing event where results on the water matter less than helping people who may have never been on a boat.
It's the26th annual Yacht Clubs of Long Beach Charity Regatta for The Children's Clinic focused on“Serving Children and Their Families” (TCC), a cause that celebrated its silver anniversary last year and has raised more than half a million dollars to aid youngsters over the last quarter-century.
Racing hosted by the AlamitosBay, Long Beach, Seal Beach and Shoreline yacht clubs will start at noon, conditions permitting. Other participating clubs are Little Ships Fleet, Marina YC, Navy YC, Long Beach Singles YC and Blue Gavel District 10.
As many as three races will be run inside AlamitosBay for dinghies and on the ocean inside and outside the breakwater for keelboats. There also will be a distance race for a Cruising class.
Information about entry procedure, registration fees and other details is available in the Notice of Race. There is no online entry system.
All entry and sponsorship funds go to the six non-profit 501c (3) licensed community health clinics serving low income, uninsured and underinsured children and their families in the greater Long Beach area.
Also, benefits and proceeds from related events, such as a swap meet in July and a golf tournament in August, go to TCC.
Following the racing Alamitos Bay Yacht Club will host a burger bash, silent auction and drawing starting at 3:30 p.m.
The Children's Clinic was organized in 1939 and before the Charity Regatta was formed was well on its way to servingchildren and adults to age 95, marking more than 70,000 visits to TCC for high quality health care services. Sailboat racing joined the cause in 1987 as a natural cultural connection for Long Beach.
Norma Clapp of ABYC is a former chairman and still treasurer of the regatta since it started, even throughopen heart surgery 14 months ago.
She said last year before the silver anniversary regatta, "I wouldn't miss it ... I will be there," and she was, as she will be this year.
