BALL® Fresh Preserving AWARD FOR ADULT LEVEL

Presented by: BALL® & KERR® Fresh Preserving PRODUCTS

Jarden Home Brands, marketers of Ball ® and Kerr® Fresh Preserving Products is proud to recognize today’s fresh preserving (canning) enthusiasts. First and Second Place Awards will be given to individuals judged as the best in designated categories.

A panel of judges will select the two best entries for Fruit, Vegetable, Pickle, and Soft Spread categories. Entries must be preserved in Ball® Jars sealed with Ball® Lids and Bands, or Ball® Collection Elite® Jars sealed with Collection Elite® Lids and Bands, Ball® Heritage Collection Jars sealed with Ball® Lids and Bands, or preserved in Kerr® Jars sealed with Kerr® Lids and Bands. In addition, soft spread entries must be prepared using Ball® Pectin: Classic, Low or No-Sugar Needed or Liquid.

Entries designated First Place from each category will receive:

• Two (2) Five-Dollar ($5) Coupons for Ball® or Kerr® Fresh Preserving Products and

one (1) Free (up to $5 value) Coupon for Ball® Pectin.

Entries designated Second Place from each category will receive:

• One (1) Five-Dollar ($5) Coupon for Ball® or Kerr® Fresh Preserving Products and

one (1) Free (up to $5 value) Coupon for Ball® Pectin.

2017 YOUTH PREMIUM FOOD PRESERVATION AWARDS

Presented by Jarden Home Brands

In recognition of youth who excel in the art of fresh preserving (canning), Jarden Home Brands, marketers of the Ball® and Kerr® Fresh Preserving Products will present First Place Awards in designated categories.

A panel of judges will select the best entry in each category for Fruit, Vegetable, Pickle, and Soft Spread. 2017 BEST-OF-CATEGORY: PICKLED FOODS AWARD

To promote the art of pickling foods and safe home canning, Jarden Home Brands is offering this special adult award category. Any entry meeting the following guidelines is eligible. The best pickled fruit or pickled vegetable prepared using 5% acidity vinegar, submitted by an adult and canned in a Ball home Canning jar and sealed with a Ball Two-Piece Vacuum Cap, Collection Elite Cap or Freedom Garden Cap or canned in a Kerr Home Canning jar and sealed with a Kerr Two Piece CVacuum cap, Collection Elite Cap or Freedom Garden Cap shall by designated Best of Category: Pickled Foods.

2017 BEST OF CATEGORY: SOFT SPREAD AWARD

To promote the art of preparing soft spreads and safe home canning, Jarden Home Brands is offering this special adult award category. Any entry meeting the following guidelines is eligible. The best soft spread prepared using Ball Fruit Jell Pectin, submitted by an adult and canned in a Ball home Canning Jar and sealed with a Ball Two Piece Vacuum Cap, Collection Elite Cap or Freedom Garden Cap or canned in a Kerr Home Canning Jar and sealed with a Ker Two Piece Vacuum Cap, Collection Elite Cap or Freedom Garden Cap shall by designated Best of Category: Soft Spreads.

The entry designated Best of Category: Soft Spreads, receives the following: * One (1) set of 48 Harvest Fruit Labels, three (3) coupons for any variety Ball Fruit Jell Pectin, one (1) complete jelly Strainer, one (1) Jelly Strainer Replacement bag and one (1) set of Ball recipe brochures.

RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS FOR EXHIBITING HOME CANNED FOODS AT FAIRS:

• All canned foods must be in standard clear glass canning jars with self sealing,

two piece lids. Inappropriate jars include: non-standard canning jars green or blue glass

jars bail jars or jars with zinc lids.

• Jars must have a vacuum seal (except jars containing dried product

• Appropriate headspace requirements must be followed.

These are: Fruits: ½ inch Vegetables: 1 – 1 ½ inch

Sweet Spreads: ¼ inch Pickles: ½ inch Meats: 1 inch

• The size of the canning jar must be consistent with USDA guidelines:

Fruits and vegetables –pints or quarts (except cream style corn, pints only)

Fruit Juice – pints, quarts or half gallons

Tomatoes – pints or quarts

Sweet Spreads – half pints or pints

Fish – half pints or pints

Meat – pints or quarts

Pickles – pints or quarts

Relishes – half pints or pints

THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR EXHIBITING AT A FAIR

a. Foods packaged and processed following current USADA/CES, UA recommendations.

b. Paraffin sealed jams and jellies.

c. Foods that have been improperly packed or processed. E.g.: fancy packed vegetables,

NOTE: shingle pack for fruits is acceptable.

d. Jars with more than a 2 inch headspace.

e. Jars with color altered through the addition of dyes, bleach, sulfite or other agents. (For

example, baking soda may not be added to green vegetables and acids may not be

added to non pickled foods except tomatoes and figs).
