SGA Common Questions and Answers
Q) Can a mechanic take the exam in a different office than the originating office?
A) Yes, if a mechanic has relocated or another office is closer than the originating office the exam can be taken at the more convenient office.
Q) If a mechanic took part of the test (written/oral) at St. George Aviation and part at another facility, can only the portion of the test taken at St. George Aviation be retaken?
A) The FAA has reasonable basis to question whether certificate holders tested by SGA posses the qualifications to hold their certificate(s). The FAA intends to determine qualification using two tests, a written and an oral. The written reexamination test is not a replacement for the previous written but an element of our making the determination of qualification. Mechanics are required to complete the FULL reexamination and will not be considered exempt from either written or oral reexamination.
Q) What happens if a mechanic received either the Airframe or Powerplant certificate from SGA and the other certificate from another facility?
A) Mechanics only have to retest for the certificate(s) received at SGA, either the airframe or powerplant. However, the General written will be administered with either certificate. Options for written exams are: Airframe/powerplant/general, airframe/general, powerplant/general.
Q) Is there any dispensation for individuals who are on active military duty for testing at a later date.
A) Relief for U.S. Military and Civilian Personnel who are assigned outside the United States in support of U.S. Armed Forces Operations will be applied to mechanics requiring reexamination. The criteria for this relief will be the same as is offered in SFAR 100 to take a practical test and includes the opportunity to complete reexamination within 6 (six) calendar months after returning to the United States.
Q) Can a mechanic take an Inspection Authorization test in lieu of the A&P retest?
A) No. FSAW 04-10A Paragraph 5A indicates that a mechanic that has obtained an IA prior to the date of the notification letter is exempt from the reexamination. If a mechanic has not passed the IA exam as of the date of the notification letter, the full reexamination must be done prior to proceeding with the IA.
Q) What information does the FAA need to document that the testing at St. George Aviation was properly conducted?
A) The FAA needs specific evidence supporting your contention as to what transpired during the testing phase at SGA. We do not need, and will not accept, training records from a mechanic on any training done before or after the certificate(s) were issued. Please provide sufficient information so that the FAA can verify the information.
