MSL 106 – Military Physical Fitness SY14-15

1.  Course Description: MSL106 is a 1-credit course conducted during the fall and

spring semesters. The class focuses on military movement and fitness techniques used in the United States Army. Scheduled class periods are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 0600-0730. Monday and Friday sessions meet at the Schreiber Gym basketball court. Tuesday and Thursday sessions meet at the University Recreation Center on the main floor basketball courts.

2.  Course Objectives: The primary focus of instruction is to provide Cadets with an understanding of military physical fitness and the basic requirements for physical conditioning standards in the United States Army. The goal is for each participant to embrace fitness as a lifetime commitment to improved physical and mental health. We will accomplish these objectives through practical application of the following subjects:

a.  Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT)

b.  Weight Training

c.  Ruck Marching

d.  High intensity cardiovascular sprints

e.  Long distance running

f.  Cross-fit

g.  VO^2 max workouts

h.  Obstacle courses

i.  Team building exercises

j.  Recovery Drills

k.  Ranger Challenge

3.  Course Requirements:

a.  Class attendance: Cadets are required to attend all scheduled physical fitness days and must obtain permission from the instructor prior to missing any training. Cadets are responsible for the make-up of any missed classes. All contracted and prospect ROTC Cadets are required to attend every fitness session. Civilians taking MSL 106 for credit and not interested in ROTC are required to attend three fitness sessions per week. The fitness uniforms will be worn to class. The standard uniform for physical training is the Individual Physical Fitness Uniform (IPFU). Uniforms should be generally free of odor any unsoiled. Only issued uniform items may be worn.

b.  Readings: Each Cadet is responsible to read the designated workouts prior to class and be prepared to execute the fitness exercises accordingly. There may be altered fitness plans due to weather. TC 3-22.20 Army Physical Readiness Training, August 2010 is also a referred document.

c.  Examinations: The only exam that is graded in MSL 106 is the Army Physical Fitness Test. The test is graded on the Army standard published in TC 3-22.20 Army Physical Readiness Training. The test consists of the following:

1.  2 minutes of pushups

2.  2 minutes of sit-ups

3.  2 mile run

d.  Leadership Positions: Each MSIII will assume a variety of platoon/squad leadership positions throughout the semester. These garrison positions (BN CSM, BN Ops NCO, First Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, and Squad Leader) are evaluated positions and will be considered at the end of year Cadet Evaluation Report (CER). During physical fitness training in MSL 106, the MSIIIs will be the primary leaders of the exercise plans.

4.  Course Evaluation: This course can be taken for letter grade only. Grading criteria is as follows:

a. Attendance: Class, Lab, PT, FTX 95%

f. Record APFT 5%

5. Grading Scale: A = 90-100%

B = 80-89%

C = 70-79%

D = 60-69%

F = 0-59%
