Daytona Cubs Announce 2012 Field Staff

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Cubs announced the Field Staff for the 2012 season, Wednesday. Brian Harper has been named Cubs' Manager, Marty Mason has been named Pitching Coach, Desi Wilson has been named Hitting Coach and Pete Fagan returns for his second season as Trainer.

Brian Harper takes over for Buddy Bailey who had been Manager of the Cubs since 2009. Harper spent the 2011 season as the Manager of the AA-Tennessee Smokies, and led them to the Southern League Championship Series. Prior to joining the Cubs organization, Harper was the Manger of San Francisco's Advanced A affiliate, the San Jose Giants in 2010 and led them to the California League Championship. The San Pedro, California native has also served as the roving Catching Instructor for the San Francisco Giants (08 & 09), Manager of the Salt Lake Bees (AAA-Angels) in '06 & '07, and Manager of the Arizona Fall League Angels from '01-'05. Harper is a former Major League catcher who was drafted by the California Angels in the fourth round of the 1977 amateur draft. He played 16 seasons in the majors (1979-95) and logged a .295 career batting average with 63 home runs and 423 RBIs in 1,001 career games. Harper split time between the Angels, Pirates, Cardinals, Tigers, A's, Twins, and Brewers. The Scottsdale, AZ resident made two World Series Appearances, one with St. Louis in 1985 and one with the World Champion Twins in 1991. Harper is married to Kimberly and has five children: Brett, Derek, Lance, John, and Aja. Brett plays professionally for the Yokohama BayStars in the Japan League.

Marty Mason joins Harper from Tennessee for his first season with Daytona as Pitching Coach. Mason will take over for Tom Pratt who was in Daytona from 2000-2004, 2006, 2009-2011. In his first season with Smokies in 2011, Mason helpedguide LHP Jeff Beliveau into the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Prior to 2011, Mason spent 25 seasons as a coach in the St. Louis system, including 11 as the Major League Bullpen Coach. The Central City, KY native received an Outstand Achievement award from the St. Louis BBWAA for his work with the Cardinals relief staff in 2005. Harper has also served as St. Louis' AAA pitching coach in Memphis ('98-'99) and Louisville ('97), coached at AA-Arkansas ('90-'96), A-Savannah ('88) and began his coaching career with A-St. Petersburg ('86-'87, '89). The Hobe Sound, FL resident was signed by the Yankees in 1980 and was acquired by St. Louis in 1982. He was 46-27 with 33 saves and a 2.59 ERA in 276 career Minor League appearances covering seven seasons. Mason is married to his wife Lynn and has two children: Brandy Leigh and Lindsey.

Desi Wilson begins his fifth season in the Cubs organization and first with Daytona. Wilson spent '09 and '11 as hitting coach for A-Boise and was the hitting coach for Rookie-League Mesa in '08 and '10. The Glen Cove, NY native appeared in 41 games for the San Francisco Giants in 1996, hitting .271 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Wilson was drafted by Boston in the 15th round of the 1987 Draft but did not sign. He was selected by Houston in

the 87th round of the 1989 Draft but did not sign. Wilson signed with Texas after he was chosen in the 30th round of the 1991 draft. The Gilbert, AZ resident produced a .307 career Minor League batting average in 10 seasons and 1,043 games with five organizations (Texas, San Francisco, Arizona, the White Sox and Montreal). Wilson is married to his wife Kristi and has four children: Tayah, Hillary, Rhalee and Desi Jr.

Pete Fagan returns to Daytona for his second season as Daytona Cubs Trainer. The Clearwater, FL native has 28 years of Profession Baseball experience. He worked with the Cardinals organization for 1982-2000 and with the Houston organization from 2001-2010.

Buddy Bailey will manage the AA-Tennessee Smokies in 2012. Bailey compiled a 220-197 record over his three full seasons in Daytona (09-11), including leading the Cubs to its fifth Florida State League Title in 2011. The Norristown, PA native and Madison Heights, VA resident led Daytona to its best record for a half in club history after boasting a 47-23 mark in the first half of '11, which included win streaks of eight games (twice) and 12 games. Bailey was named to the 2011 Florida State League end-of-the-season All-Star Team as a Manager. 2012 will mark Bailey's 24th season as a Minor League Manager. Bailey recorded his 1,500th career win as a Manager when Daytona topped Tampa 8-3 at Steinbrenner Field on May 3rd, 2011. Tom Pratt and Barbaro Garbey will spend 2012 in Peoria with the A-Chiefs.
