International Communications Club

Target audience:1st year students in SHS

Objective:Learning information about different countries and cultures and then using this information in class

Materials:International Communications Club Worksheet and country information cards

Procedure:After a short warmup inform the class that they will be acting the part of an international communications club today and give out the worksheets.

The main part of the lesson will consist of the students doing an interview with other students who will be pretending to be from different countries. So it may be necessary to practice the questions that they will need to know. I.e. Where are you from? What food is popular in your country? For weaker classes these questions may have to also be written on the board but they can be removed as they students become more used to saying them.

Next you should hand out the country information cards to the students. Students’ desks are spread over 6 rows and 5 columns so I have 6 copies of each country card and hand these across the row. Each row will get a different card. It may be necessary at this point to help the students with some of the more difficult information that is on the card.

Students should then move desks to face each other so that instead of 6 rows, we now have 3. As the students facing each other now have the same cards you should get students on either the right or left side to move down one seat. After jankening for who goes first, one student will ask the other a series of questions and will write down the information they provide them. Once this is completed they switch roles. This should take between 5 and 7 mins and after they are finished the students who moved should move down another seat and so interview someone with a different country card.

If any time is remaining after all the interviews are complete you can quiz the students, with the sheets turned over to see if they recall any of the information that they have given out.

Additional information:It is important to try and match the level of information on the cards with your students abilities and not to make assumptions about what they would know. My students had a low knowledge of the names of famous landmarks and that it was helpful to show them pictures of each landmark at the beginning of the lesson.
